September 17, 2014 murder Sammamish WA: Pair kills Boeing exec flees to Canada Kevin Patterson, 20, and Christopher Shade, 18, were arrested in Canada and were each charged with murder, robbery and motor vehicle theft after being accused of binding and then bludgeoning Richard Bergesen to death in his Sammamish home with shovels. Patterson called a friend who called into 911, telling that Richard Bergesen, the 57-year-old Sammamish homeowner who had taken Patterson into his home, had made a sexual advance toward him and he grabbed a shovel and hit him on the head, and then stole Bergesen’s credit cards and 2013 BMW and fled to Canada with Shade. It was the first murder in the upscale suburb of Seattle. Bergesen met a homeless Patterson at Overlake Christian Church in Redmond and let him stay at his home for over a year. [1]
Shade told police that he hadn't met Patterson until the day before to help defend him against his housemate who was making sexual advances on him, and help with a plan to drug his housemate, take his money and flee to Canada, and was told to wait until he saw Patterson beating Bergeson with a shovel. Patterson told women he was with in Canada that when he came home, someone had broken into the house and killed Bergesen, so he anonymously reported the killing to 911, and then left for Canada. He told police a slightly different version of the story is that after he invited Shade to his home, he had left briefly to find Shade beating Bergesen with a shovel and then forced him at knife point to tie up Bergesen and take his wallet. Patterson has dual citizenship in Canada, and his criminal record include convictions for custodial assault, ID theft, forgery and 4th degree assault.
The pair used the credit cards “to buy gas, two Canadian pre-paid cell phones, an Apple Macbook computer and clothes.” but they were found by the tracking device on the stolen BMW. They were arrested at a motel for stealing the car and illegally entering Canada by bypassing the border crossing.
