September 9, 2012 Ricky Coley Michigan Commando Standoff Kills 1 Policeman In West Bloomfield, military veteran Ricky Coley led police to a standoff after his marriage ended in divorce and he was accused of adultery and physical and emotional abuse. He had lost custody of his child and had been ordered out of his house. Rather than being peacefully evicted, he used a "battle mindset" to use wood panels to barricade his doors and windows to his house and was armed with a "a fully automatic Uzi" in addition to high-powered rifles, handguns, knives, a bullet-resistant vest and protective goggles. In the gun battle, he engaged in significant gunfire with law enforcement, ultimately killing police officer Patrick O'Rourke before police found the suspect dead from shooting himself in his bedroom. About 15 families were evacuated from nearby homes during the 20-hour standoff that ended when Coley was found dead.

In the last case, the media learned that the cop-killer, Ricky Coley, a military veteran, had "a fully automatic Uzi" in addition to high-powered rifles, handguns, knives, a bullet-resistant vest and protective goggles. About 15 families were evacuated from nearby homes during the 20-hour standoff that ended when Coley was found dead. The local Fox TV station reported that the confrontation started after Coley's marriage ended in divorce and he was accused of adultery and physical and emotional abuse. He had lost custody of his child and had been ordered out of his house. But he refused to be evicted. The slain officer, Patrick O'Rourke, is survived by his wife, four children, parents and three brothers. Perhaps some additional "militarization" might have saved his life.

(CBS/AP) WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Ricky Coley, the suspected gunman who gunned down a 12-year police veteran, ended the 20-hour standoff between police at his suburban Detroit home by killing himself in an apparent suicide, officials said Tuesday.
Officers were visiting the West Bloomfield Township home responding to a report of a possible suicide attempt Sunday night when Coley shot police officer Pat O'Rourke, authorities said. About 15 families were evacuated from nearby homes during the subsequent standoff that ended when Coley was found dead in his bed Monday evening.
Coley killed himself with a gunshot to the mouth, according to Dr. Cheryl Loewe of the Oakland County medical examiner's office in a report released Tuesday.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters Tuesday that Coley, a military veteran, had "a fully automatic Uzi" in addition to high-powered rifles, handguns, knives, a bullet-resistant vest and protective goggles.
"It appeared to be just a battle mindset," Bouchard said. "He had the firepower. He had barricaded windows and covered doors. And the way he was firing - probably because part of his military background - he knew the best way to fire and not be spotted by a sniper."
