Jun 23, 2013 - A 77-year-old pastor Manard Giles Jr., the pastor at The Answer Community Church from Quartz Hill died when a suspected drunken driver headed in the wrong direction on the 17 Antelope Valley Freeway The crash also severely injured Giles' two passengers, both church members, family members said. Giles and his passengers were returning home from a church retreat in San Diego when the crash occurred. The crash occurred before dawn when Bradford E. Pate, 38, llegedly steered his 2006 Toyota truck south onto the northbound lanes and collided with Giles' 2006 Chrysler 300 on the 14 Freeway near Escondido Canyon Road. this was the second wrong-way crash on the same stretch of freeway this past week. On Monday, June 17, a driver who was under the influence of methamphetamines crashed into eight vehicles and injured 13 people about 4:36 p.m. Three of those injured were listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
