e driver, identified as Julio Martinez-Cortes, 26, of Seattle, drove a 1998 Plymouth Neon westbound in the eastbound lanes after getting on the freeway at a 520 construction site at 84th Avenue in Medina, said Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Trooper Julie Judson.
A worker on the Washington State Department of Transportation project at the site reported the wrong-way driver, Judson said, as did several other drivers on State Route 520.
Martinez-Cortes drove the length of State Route 520 to the Montlake portion of the highway, causing several drivers to make evasive maneuvers and causing at least one other collision, Judson said.
Trooper Andrew Boyer, 27, was on his way to the scene in a 2007 Washington State Patrol Crown Victoria when a taxi driver in front of him got out of Martinez-Cortes' way, Judson said. Boyer attempted to get out of the way, but Martinez-Cortes struck the patrol car, she said.

- 26 year old Julio Martinez Cortes was going the wrong way, driving west on the eastbound 520 when he hit State Trooper Andrew Boyer’s patrol car.. Seeing the allegedly intoxicated driver and imminent danger Boyer quickly maneuvered his car, a trick learned in basic training, to minimize damage to the car and impact. The collision didn’t stop the driver who kept going and eventually continued on to the I-5. Boyer described the driver as having, ” a blank look on his face”. The driver then continued driving the wrong way going North in the Southbound lanes of the I-5 until his car died close to 45th street. The suspect then ran from the car until falling from a 20 foot embankment leading to his arrest. Firefighters pulled him from the enbankment where he was taken to Harborview medical center in Seattle. Trooper Boyle was unharmed but did suffer from a sore neck. Boyer felt well enough to complete his shift and switched his patrol car to finish the day.
