April 15, 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings During the Boston Marathon, two pressure cooker bombs exploded at 2:49 pm EDT killing 3 people and injuring an estimated 264 others by two Chechen Americans. An MIT college campus police officer was shot and killed. They were not connected to any terrorist organization but were clearly inspired by militant Islamism as well as conspiracy theories found in far-right white nationalist publications. Conspiracy theories on Islamist and far-right media claimed the attacks were "false-flag" or hoax events staged by crisis actors.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was born in the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, while Dzhokhar was born in 1993 in Kyrgyzstan, or Dagestan by family claims. They are half Chechen through their father, Anzor, who although they never lived in Chechnya, the brothers self-identified as Chechen The Tsarnaev family were immigrants who emigrated in 2002 to the United States where they applied for refugee status. The the Caucasian Islamist organization which is at war with Russia stated they were not at war with the United States and had sworn off violence against civilians since 2012. The bombings have so far not been definitely tied to any other terrorist organization. Their mother and father were known to be thoroughly versed in the belief that 9/11 was a government conspiracy to justify a war against Muslims, and remain convinced that they were innocent and framed. The brothers had been introduced to extremist and white-nationalist / conspiracy-oriented publications by an American friend who they helped convert to Islam such as the American Free Press. The assumption is that they were self-radicalized like Nidal Hasan who shot soldiers at Fort Hood in an attack which was never definitively attributed to terrorism as a motive or criminal charge.

Tsarnaevs used Christmas lights to make bomb fuses CNN May 22, 2014 Marathon bombing suspects used Christmas lights and model-car parts to make the explosives, prosecutors said in court documents obtained by CNN on Wednesday. "The Marathon bombs were constructed using improvised fuses made from Christmas lights and improvised, remote-control detonators fashioned from model car parts," federal prosecutors said in a motion filed Wednesday. "These relatively sophisticated devices would have been difficult for the Tsarnaevs to fabricate successfully without training or assistance from others." To obtain explosive fuel for the pressure cooker bombs, the filing says, brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev "appeared to have crushed and emptied hundreds of individual fireworks containing black powder."
