Mental illness or are these all political statements and martyrdom attacks?
You might be a psy-op terrorist if you try to set yourself on fire. Most high profile suicides are some kind of anti war or anti government protest.  Case of  Malachi Ritscher with suicide note against war has been obsessively concerned with his sanity. The AP article on his death includes this conclusion, “Mental health experts say virtually no suicides occur without some kind of a diagnosable mental illness.”

In 1991 during the war in the Persian Gulf, three Americans committed self-immolation in protest, one in Amherst, Mass., and two in Northern California. Eight people in the country also chose such a death as a way of protesting the Vietnam War during the 1960's and 1970's.

Sunday, September 27, 2015 1 killed suspect suicide Burned Body at Le Moyne College in Syracuse NY Ruled Apparent Suicide Police determined that the burned body of a woman in her 50s at Le Moyne College was the result of an apparent suicide as she was seen on video buying  bought fuel, a lighter and a gas can from  gas station before apparently setting herself on fire. The woman was known to have a history of depression and mental illness, and lived near the campus, but had no connection to the college. It was homecoming weekend at Le Moyne which is a private Catholic Jesuit college in Syracuse, New York. It was similar to black man John Constantino who set himself on fire at the DC National Mall  allegedly railed against America His family stated the apparent protest was the result of mental illness and 'was not a political act or statement.'

October 4, 2013  Man Sets Himself On Fire on National Mall The day after Miriam Carey gets shot after driving like she and her child are filming a terrorist movie, an African American man later identified as John Constantino, 64, of Mount Laurel sets himself afire. The African American man set himself on fire at the National Mall at 4:30 in the afternoon after dousing himself with gasoline and burst aflame squatting without a shirt. Joggers passing by took off their shirts but could not stop the flames. He was airlifted to a hospital while conscious in critical condition. He died the next day in a hospital. One witness says an accomplice filmed the entire ordeal, but that video never surfaced. According to his family, John was “a loving father and husband.” but his death was “not a political act or statement, but the result of his long battle with mental illness.” Time's Joe Klein blamed it on the "radical nihilist minority of the GOP's craven leadership.. radicals", calling Republicans a "pestilence feeding on ignorance and cynicism". Police are investigating a motive.
