October 20, 2013 At the Bridge Community Church North Hampton Ohio , Rev Normon Hayes was savagely beaten by a self-described militant atheist James Maxie after he asked Maxie's girlfriend if he was being abused. The beating downed him with a punch, and then got on top of him and kept hitting over and over, leavinglong gashes over the man’s eyes and breaking his nose. Maxie was a 28-year-old sex offender with a violent past, and he was arrested after he ran away across corn fields and had behind a house. Maxie claimed he was at the church to reclaim his faith in God, and his questions about science and religon angered the minister, and objected that the pastor had told his girlfriend she was "going to hell for dating me", but later apologized in a courtroom about the attack. Maxie was convicted of felony assault in 2006 and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in 2007, and was charged in 2004 with four counts of cruelty to animals. His Facebook profile makes references to atheism and criticisms of religion.
