October 5, 2013 In Chihuahua Mexico, an out-of-control monster truck with 5 ft wheels shot into a crowd of spectators at an air show, killing eight people and hurting 79. Alcohol was detected on the breath of driver, and he tested positive for alcohol use. On a second pass, the truck hit hard on a second car before veering off into the stands, damaging a semi-truck and mowing down spectators. Officials believe it could have been caused by mechanical failure. According to PressTV, "driver Francisco Velasquez Samaniego - who was reported to be drinking a couple of sips of beer before the event - hit his head and lost consciousness after crushing a row of parked cars, then continued to accelerate after hitting the crowd." Others said his helmet came off with the impact. The driver was detained on Sunday on suspicion of negligent homicide, and possible safety violations as he was directed to never drive directly towards the crowd. Two armed men threw a firebomb at other monster trucks parked at a nearby hotel for another air show event.

Iran's PressTV was quick to blame Mexico's patchy and loosely enforced system of consumer safety as a September Tropical Storm Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid killed 157 people and displaced thousands because of the government’s failure to enforce architectural standards for the nation’s buildings and infrastructure.

No media accounts mentioned the possibility of a deliberate attack or terrorist incident as drug cartels have been discovered building armored "monster trucks" with gun turrets for drug running operations, and gunmen were firebombing other monster trucks nearby, while some laid blame on the mantra of "lack of government regulation" which commonly pops up in industrial disasters which look suspiciously like deliberate terrorist attacks.

Possible motive? According to CNN, Al Qaeda's Inspire magazine carried an article titled "The Ultimate Mowing Machine" calls for using a pickup truck as a "mowing machine, not to mow grass but mow down the enemies of Allah." such a plan could be implemented in countries where people back the "Israeli occupation of Palestine, the American invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq or countries that had a prominent role in the defamation of Muhammad." It said a four-wheel-drive pickup truck is needed -- "the stronger the better.""To achieve maximum carnage, you need to pick up as much speed as you can while still retaining good control of your vehicle in order to maximize your inertia and be able to strike as many people as possible in your first run," the article says.

A mechanical failure may have been the main cause of the accident, officials say. However, the driver later tested positive for alcohol consumption.
