Fire Starts in Winona MN Islamic Center

Fire Starts in Winona MN Islamic Center

September 13, 2013 A fire which started at 2AM destroyed Winona's Islamic center threatened the entire downtown block, destroying 3 historic buildings. 6 residents of apartments were evacuated, none were hurt. It is not known if it was accidental or arson, but the fire chief and police believed "there is nothing to indicate at this time that any foul play is involved". Retired professor Winona State University Ahmed El-Afandi who founded the center in 1993 noted “Nobody [in the community] has given us any trouble.” He was walking downtown to McDonald's when he saw the fire News reports note that because it involves a mosque it will be a sensitive case.

Who would have access to the mosque, and who would have a motive to burn down historic downtown Winona or the boardwalk in New Jersey?

No foul play suspected in Friday fire that destroyed Islamic Center

Fire Chief Curt Bittle and Winona Police Chief Paul Bostrack said there is nothing to indicate at this time that any foul play is involved with the fire, which appeared to start in the Islamic Center. It hasn't been determined where the fire started, or what its cause was. Bostrack added that there has not been a history of of incidents or threats at the center, but said the Winona Police Department is investigating
Fahad Al Dossari, a member of the Winona Islamic Center, was walking downtown to McDonald's when he saw the fire.[what time?] He said because Friday is a major day of worship for Muslims, he was unsure of where the 30 or so center members would gather for early afternoon prayer.
