Months of work on Kaufman DA killings ended with arrest of man suspected at the beginning

Published: 21 April 2013

Eric Williams, a once-respected local attorney and former justice of the peace, is in the Kaufman County Jail on capital murder charges. His wife, Kim Williams, a near-recluse afflicted by chronic and disabling illnesses, also is behind bars there. Authorities say she confessed that her husband shot Hasse and the McLellands and that she drove with him to both murders.
Both could face the death penalty.
After Hasse was killed on Jan. 31, many law enforcement officials thought that Williams might be responsible. That included McLelland.
Why wasn’t more attention focused on Williams after Hasse was shot?

McLelland’s office accused Williams of stealing three county computer monitors within a year. Williams faced charges of theft by a public servant and burglary.
Williams denied the accusations. He claimed he’d wanted the monitors to set up a “video magistration” system so he could arraign defendants from his office. And he unsuccessfully tried to block McLelland from prosecuting the case.
Hasse told that judge that “this guy’s got to go to prison.” The judge disagreed. He sentenced Williams to two years’ probation. But Williams paid a heavy price for the conviction.
He was removed as JP. He lost his county salary and his health benefits. He lost his law license and the income he earned as an attorney. And he could no longer be a regular or reserve police officer, something he’d done for more than two decades....Eric Williams was convicted and sentenced in April 2012
The Ranger and the deputy were allowed into the couple’s brown and tan brick home in Kaufman, a Christmas wreath still hanging on the door, on April 11. The Ranger spotted several weapons parts, including rifle stocks for assault rifles that fired the same kind of cartridge used to kill the McLellands. He also saw packaging for .357-caliber revolvers, a weapon capable of shooting the kind of bullets that killed Hasse.
Authorities returned to the Williams home the next day with a search warrant. Among the items they seized were “multiple cellphones,” night vision goggles, tactical boots, a “balaclava-type mask,” several parts for weapons “capable of firing .223-caliber ammunition like that used in the McLelland murders” and two .357 revolvers.
Williams also was arrested for making a “terroristic threat.” Authorities said that Williams sent an email anonymously to county officials one day after the McLelland murders promising another attack if demands were not met.

Kaufman County, Texas, District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were murdered Saturday evening in their Dallas-area home. The attack comes two months after one of McLelland's deputies was shot and killed and two weeks after Colorado prisons director Tom Clements was murdered at his home.

The Jan. 31 murder of Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse remains unsolved, but investigators believe a possible motive was retaliation for anti-Aryan Brotherhood prosecutions by the DA's office. Clements was believed to have been killed March 19 by a white supremacist who then died after a police chase in northern Texas
