Following calls warning of the bomb threat, police were able to evacuate the Mall before the explosion. Defence Net reported a warning call was made to the Eleftherotypia newspaper, followed by another call to the website Zougla.gr, warning of an imminent explosion at the Mall, Maroussi. As warned, the bomb exploded 50 minutes later at 10.53 a.m. According to Ekathimerini police said the explosion was caused by a time-bomb. The blast occurred during the evacuation of the mall. Greek media reports that it was likely the bomb was set to explode at the time when police are known to patrol the mall.

ATHENS — Two security guards were injured in a bomb blast at a shopping center a few miles north of the Greek capital Sunday, stoking new fears of escalating violence and extremism in the economically stumbling nation.
The attack on a state bank branch in a massive shopping mall came less than a week after masked men opened fire with an AK-47 and a revolver on the headquarters of the governing New Democracy party, targeting the office of its leader, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras
