March 13, 2013 In Chicago, Koman Willis approached father Jonathan Watkins as he was changing diapers of 6-month old infant daughter Jonylah from behind, and fired 10 shots. Half of the shots critically wounded the baby, who later died. Willis later admitted to police that the shooting was in retaliation for stealing a video game console from his mother's house, and police believed that the father, not the child was the intended victim. It was just weeks after Hadiyah Pendelton, a 15-year-old drum majorette was shot a mile from President Barack Obama's and had performed at the president's inauguration
It sounds sounds like a lame cover story for a shooting. How could half the shots hit the child at point blank range and not be one of the targets?

Press TV: First of all, no mercy even for a 6-month-old baby girl! I mean, where is morality heading in the United States?
Maupin: Well, it is very clear that in the United States there is all this police state measures. You know, we have surveillance drones watching from the skies; we have stop and frisk and police patting people down; we have police everywhere; we have a huge prison apparatus but yet horrific events like what just occurred continue to happen.
This police state, this whole apparatus that is being created is not making us any safer. The more gun laws they pass, the more police that are everywhere, these things continue to happen. People need to think seriously about whether the government is really trying to keep us safe or what their real agenda actually is because it happens over and over and over again and the more society locks down, the more these things continue to happen.
Press TV: What measures should be taken especially with regards to America’s gun culture and gun laws to prevent these killings and of course literally, if you will, save American from themselves?
Maupin: Well, you know, the fact that the people are being killed in the United States, that there is murder, it is a society-wide problem. It is not just a problem with any specific group of people. It is a society-wide problem that is affected everywhere.
Here in New York City, we are mourning the fact that 19-year-old [Komani Grey] was killed by the police here in New York City. Everywhere, people are dying. There is murder going on in the United State and it really gets back to the fact that the United States human beings are commodities. They are considered profit making entities. Something you can make money off of; they are not valued as humans and people are taught to resent each other.We live in a society in which money is the defining feature and we live in global capitalism and as wars continue, as prison apparatus is continued to be built, more and more money is being made by a small wealthy group of people and that is what is happening and as the society continues to lock down, more people continue to be killed and we see that this pursuit of profit is destroying the humanity of the people of the United States in the world.

hy don’t the citizens of Chicago get the same attention, when Chicago’s violence and subsequent suffering—its terror—is perpetual? I fear that the perpetuity of violence in Chicago, in and of itself, is part of the problem. Because these homicides happen so often in Chicago, it’s seemingly grown to be the expectation, and the severity of the situation is greatly diminished as a result. In effect, many of us have been desensitized to violence in areas like the South Side.
Part of the problem also lies in the false and self-deluding perception that this gun violence just hurts those who were supposedly “asking for it” or “had it coming”—you know, the “thugs,” the gang members, etc. But the victims who “die by the gun” aren’t always the ones who “live by the gun.” (And should we as a society even be making such a distinction about who is worthy to live and who should die?) More and more, we’re seeing innocent bystanders across the country and especially in Chicago losing their lives as a result of this gun violence:
- 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, shot in the back and killed while simply standing with her friends in a Chicago park;
- 18-year-old Janay McFarlane, gunned down and killed walking home from a corner store;
- 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins, shot and killed while just riding in a minivan with her father
; and countless others. As Hadiya’s grand uncle, Nathaniel Pendleton, said in January, “People are afraid to go out, sit on their porches. It’s horrific. Every family is suffering.”

6-month-old baby has died after she was shot Monday while her father was changing her diaper.
After several surgeries, Jonylah Watkins passed away Tuesday morning, Chicago Pastor Corey Brooks confirmed.
Jonylah's father, identified by family members as 28-year-old Jonathan Watkins, is in stable condition. He was changing the little girl's diaper on the front passenger seat of the family van when the shooting occurred,

Police are still looking for the shooter, who ran up from behind Watkins, fired, and then took off to a nearby blue conversion van, department spokesman John Mirabelli said. Bullets struck Jonathan Watkins in the buttocks and on the right side of his face. His young daughter was hit five times: in the thigh, shoulder, lung, liver and bowels, the family later said. Witnesses reported hearing at least 10 gunshots.
