December 13, 2013  Witchita Airport Bombing Plot Terry Loewen, 58, who was an avionics technician at the airport, was arrested when he was about to enter a secure gate to drive a vehicle he believed to be packed with explosives onto the airport tarmac, hoping to commit an "act of violent jihad against the United States". He had spent months studying the airport's layout, photographing airport access points, researching flight schedules. Authorities are calling him a lone wolf who told the FBI he was inspired by the work of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki.
  4. December 13, 2013  Alsip Chicago Chemical Plant Explosion  (Heavy) Two people were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in the Chicago suburb of Alsip Friday morning. The blast took place just before noon at Blue Island Phenol, which manufactures acetone and phenol.
  5. December 13, 2013  Arapahoe High School Schooting One day before the anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, there was a shooting that injured two people. Eye witness reports that student Karl Halverson Pierson shot two other students in the cafeteria and set off molotov cocktails incendiary bombs in an 80 second rampage. The shooter was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was a self-proclaimed socialist who was anti-authoritarian and often got into heated arguments with students and teachers. He had been disciplined for conflicts with his debate teacher, but was still on the team.
  6. 1 killed December 13, 2013  shooting Family of Corvette driver killed on live TV gets $5 million from LA Los Angeles Times The driver of the Corvette, Brian Beaird was killed by a police officer after a suspected drunk- or reckless-driver pursuit in Cudahy by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies. Beaird was driving erratically and at high rates of speed on freeways and surface streets running stop signs and red lights when Beaird crashed into a Nissan crossing the intersection, and Beaird staggered out of his mangled Corvette, and was surrounded by officers and briefly raised his hands when he was shot several times. He died less than an hour later. LA To Settle Brian Beaird Police-death Lawsuit For $5 Million Beaird had a number of emotional problems following his brain surgery and the death of six close friends in a military helicopter crash...Beaird was discharged from the National Guard in 1988 after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor and needed regular medical care. His family believed he was paranoid and "couldn't understand why the police were chasing him, and he didn't know what to do." No motive given for erratic driving besides mental illness.
