murder: Aug 8-11, 2011 charged August 16, 2011 Doctor Louis C. Chen Stabs Gay Partner and Kills Child In Seattle, Dr Louis Chen, 39, was charged with two counts of aggravated first-degree murder in the deaths of Eric Cooper, 29, and their 2 yr old son Cooper Chen. Chen, an endocrinologist, had recently moved to Seattle from North Carolina for a job at Virginia Mason. When he didn’t show up for his first day of work, a hospital manager went to Chen’s apartment, where it was found that doctor stabbed his partner over 100 times and cut the throat of their two-year-old son because he was upset about a break up. Chen was found naked and covered in dry blood next to the body of his partner, while the child was found dead in the bathtub of the master bedroom. When a police officer knocked on the door, a naked Chen answered the question 'Who did this?' and replied 'I did'. In December 2015, the Daily Mail (UK) reported that lawyers were planning to argue that he was mentally ill from a psychosis induced by cough medicine which he could not absorb because of his genetic Taiwan heritage. On February 26, 2016, the Seattle Gay News reported that Louis Chen has pled guilty to the 2011 slaying . The murder shocked the LGBT community and Seattle.
Seattle Times: homicide detectives found a variety of medications, along with prescriptions and blood-soaked notes written by Chen, which they say provided evidence of a possible dual motive: that Chen feared Cooper would report his prescription-drug abuse and the abuse of his prescribing powers as a doctor, or use that information against Chen in a future child-custody dispute.... analysis of Chen’s blood showed he had dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant in many over-the-counter cold and cough medicines, as well as the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, and an antihistamine in his system.... Chen spent 10 days at Harborview Medical Center, where he was treated in intensive care for an overdose of medications and self-inflicted stab wounds,
Daily Mail reports: Defense attorney Todd Maybrown said in court that Chen was mentally ill when he killed his family The couple had their differences recently and had planned to separate amicably after they got settled in Seattle, the Seattle Times newspaper reported. Prosecutors said that Chen had also promised to pay Cooper $130,000 in the event their relationship ended. But his defense team insist the 43-year-old was suffering from cough-syrup induced psychosis as a result of a buildup of dextromethorphan.
The child was conceived with Chen's sperm and the egg of an anonymous Taiwanese woman, and carried to term by a surrogate mother from Oregon. When the child was born nearly three years ago, he was adopted by Eric Cooper and named Cooper Chen.

The defense team for the 43-year-old is pursuing an insanity defense, claiming that Chen was suffering from a build-up of dextromethorphan - a cough suppressant drug found in many over-the-counter cold medicines. In large doses the drug can cause hallucinations, disassociation or detachment and - his lawyers argue - psychosis. Due to Chen's Taiwanese heritage, they say the drug metabolized slowly, allowing for a build-up in his system, the Seattle Times reports.
Man accused of killing partner, son might say cough syrup made him do it Seattle Times December 26, 2015 More than four years after Dr. Louis Chen was charged after the knife attack that killed his partner and toddler son, his defense team revealed in court documents that it intends to argue Chen’s use of over-the-counter cough syrup contributed to his psychosis. comments : They found notes that Chen feared his prescription drug abuse would be found out. So, it wasn't the cough medicine and he KNEW what he was doing taking the drugs. And then there was the break up. Too many motives for anyone to believe it was the cough syrup. October 2015 Seattle Times defense filed a motion in October suggesting Chen was suffering from cough-syrup induced psychosis as a result of a buildup of the drug dextromethorphan in his system. The motion further intimates that the drug metabolized slowly in Chen, who is Taiwanese, due to his genetic makeup.... wasn’t immediately clear if cough-syrup-induced psychosis had ever been used as the basis of a defense in a murder trial in the state....heard of induced psychosis through taking various drugs,” but never a criminal case involving cough syrup, said University of Washington law professor Mary Fan... cough syrup can produce the equivalent of a high, and like any drug that’s misused or abused it can lead to intoxication.... “The defense will also present evidence that Dr. Chen has a genetic makeup which compromises his ability to metabolize this chemical,” ... people of Asian descent may have a 50-50 chance of being born with a functioning gene variant for the normal metabolism of drugs like dextromethorphan. But roughly 40 percent of Asians and Pacific Islanders have reduced function, indicating a slower metabolism, according to a 2002 article in The Pharmacogentic Journal... At the highest levels, dextromethorphan — found in products like Robitussin and Coricidin Cough & Cold — can lead to a dissociative state, resulting in violent, unpredictable behavior, likely without the intent of the individual, according to Barry Logan, who resigned as director of the Patrol’s Forensic Laboratory Services Bureau in 2008 judges blamed him for sloppy work, ethical lapses and “fraudulent and scientifically unacceptable” practices in analyzing breath tests .
June 2013: Seattle Times Maybrown, the defense attorney, discussed Logan’s research in connection with Chen’s criminal case, according to court records and court arguments.
December 2011: Seattle Times Western State Hospital doctors could not provide a psychiatric diagnosis, largely due to a lack of information, they determined Chen showed no signs of psychosis or symptoms of a major mental illness at the time of his evaluation in December 2011. They also noted Chen was only given antipsychotic medication by staff at the King County Jail after persistent, repeated requests from Chen and his defense attorneys.
