August 17, 2014 Head-On Train Crash in Arkansas Kills 2 Wall Street Journal Two Union Pacific Corp. freight trains carrying toxic chemicals collided head-on before 3 a.m. Sunday in northeast Arkansas, killing two train crew members and injuring two others, authorities said. No toxic material is believed to have leaked as a result of the crash or a subsequent fire that burned for hours.

Melvin Smith, 27, of Mattapan, was arrested after nearby police officers heard gunshots shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday and allegedly saw him flee the scene... They released no motive for the shootings of the four men... Gambling and violence have a long history in Chinatown, where five people were shot to death — a sixth survived — at a card game in 1991. Two men are serving life sentences in the slayings.

And at a Bronx apartment building on Sedgwick Avenue, uniformed police officers shot a man who they said was beating and stabbing his girlfriend with an eight-inch knife; both were expected to survive. All told, at least 14 people in New York were struck by bullets overnight, adding to a tally of shooting victims that is an increase of more than 10 percent over last year, to more than 822 citywide.

August 17, 2014 Bank accounts of 4 missing MH370 people transferred to Pakistani mechanic account  Police are still searching for a Pakistani national Ali Farran, who last worked as a car mechanic over the alleged theft of money from bank accounts belonging to four people aboard missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, according to Malaysian investigators. Authorities have arrested two people in relation to the alleged theft: an HSBC bank officer and her husband. The bank officer is accused of using Internet banking to transfer money from four passengers' bank accounts into another passenger's account. About $10,000 (35,000 Malaysian ringgit) was then allegedly transferred to a fifth account belonging to Farran, police said

    6. 1 injured, 1 animal killed August 17, 2014 Massachusetts police shoot, kill bull after goring Boston Herald In Littleton, Massachusetts police shot and killed an out-of-control bull that gored a 74-year-old man at a livestock yard. Ronald Pollock was attempting to load the bull on a truck when it turned on him and tried to gore him with its horns.

August 17, 2014 Pennsylvania Church Doors Shot Up Troopers from Kane say officials at Faith Church in Liberty Township arrived to find someone had shot through both front doors of the church, no suspects identified. Two guns were used, one a .357 caliber, the other a 9mm — and that one of the shots resulted in a bullet found lying on a pulpit seat. 30 empty shell casings were found in the church parking lot.

He had a one-way bus ticket to Los Angeles in someone else's name and was carrying a large amount of cash... was imprisoned in 2000 for  third-degree murder, released in 2011 and convictions for assault and illegally posessing firearm (thug-as-terrorist attack?)

August 16, 2014 1 killed, 2 injured in Calif. car-to-car shooting on 60 Freeway in Rubidoux San Bernardino Sun One person was fatally wounded and two other people were injured during a car-to-car shooting on the 60 Freeway in Rubidoux as the suspects fled. The driver was grazed by a bullet, as his friends got into some sort of verbal dispute with another group at a drive-in restaurant, and were followed onto the freeway by people in a dark-colored car.
    6. 3 killed 16 injured night August 16-17, 2014 In one night in Chicago Three people were killed, including a 16-year-old boy, and sixteen others injured in shootings across the city between late Saturday morning and early Sunday morning.near Pulaski Road about two miles apart. The first was about 11:45 p.m. Saturday as three people were shot, two fatally one shot in the head and one in the back, after someone on a sidewalk fired several shots toward a car. At 1:15 a.m. victim, Kardeon Glover died in the hospital after being shot in the face.  Three men and a 15-year-old boy were wounded in the South Chicago neighborhood about 2 a.m. Sunday in at least the third attack at the same home where two teens had been shot in May and another man shot a few weeks ago. The Chicago Tribune noted 10 wounded in 9 other shooting incidents that night.

August 15, 2014 A Cop Is Killed Every 58 Hours National Review Online Michelle Malkin The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) reports that a total of 1,501 law-enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past ten years, an average of one death every 58 hours, or 150 per year. These include local and state police officers, federal officers, correctional officers, and military law-enforcement officers. Last year, 100 law-enforcement officers were killed (on every 3 days). On average, over the past decade, there have been 58,261 assaults against law enforcement each year (160 per day), resulting in 15,658 injuries. New York City has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other department, with 697 deaths. Texas has lost 1,675 officers, more than any other state. Just this week, NLEOMF released preliminary fatality statistics from August 2013 to August 2014. Total fatalities are up 14 percent, from 63 last year to 72 this year. “Five officers were killed in ambushes, which continue to be a major threat to law enforcement safety"

August 16, 2014 6 Hurt in Salt Lake City Nightclub Shooting - ABC News  Police are looking for a gunman who opened fire at 11:45 p.m Saturday night at a crowded nightclub in downtown Salt Lake City, shooting six people. The gunman fled with at least one other person in a stolen Cadillac CTS that was found 5 miles away.

August 15, 2014 Officials: Deputy badly beaten by suspect at Lakewood mall  In Los Angeles County, a sheriff’s deputy was suffered critical injuries when he was badly beaten in an unexpected attack when a suspect under arrest turned on him, knocked him down and stomped on him with his foot at the Lakewood Center shopping mall. Frankie Estrada, 21, was ultimately arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer Deputies went to the mall to investigate a report of a domestic disturbance between a man and woman.
