June 5, 1971 Jon R. Cavaiani Vietnam was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions when he disobeyed orders and decided to cover the disorderly retreat of Vietnamese Montagnards on June 5, 1971 when he was ordered to abandon them. He was with the 5th Special Force Group manning a secret radio relay site near Khe Sanh as it was attacked by North Vietnamese troops. He survived 11 days after playing dead, and spent 23 months in a POW camp.
