December 13, 2013 Witchita Airport Bombing Plot Terry Loewen, 58, who was an avionics technician at the airport, was arrested when he was about to enter a secure gate to drive a vehicle he believed to be packed with explosives onto the airport tarmac, hoping to commit an "act of violent jihad against the United States". He had spent months studying the airport's layout, photographing airport access points, researching flight schedules. Authorities are calling him a lone wolf who was inspired by the work of Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki. He said that he wanted to “commit an act of violent jihad on behalf of al Qaeda” against the United States. Loewen also freely acknowledgedthat he would be classified as an Islamic “extremist”: “Let me preface the bottom line by saying I have become ‘radicalized’ in the strongest sense of the word, and I don’t feel Allah wants me any other way.”

A 58-year-old avionics technician, identified as Terry Lee Loewen, was arrested on December 13, 2013, for allegedly planning a suicide bombing at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. Loewen became radicalized after reading extremist Islamic material on theInternet.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Loewen also goes by Terry L. Lane.[8]
Loewen's primary influences were apparently the now-defunct Revolution Muslim website and the late Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.[8] Revolution Muslim has been associated with a number of U.S.-born extremists.[9] Loewen also claimed he was attempting to support al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.[8] Three other American citizens have attempted to joinAQAP in 2013.[8]

Muslim indicted for attempting to explode car bomb at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport
Loewen said that he hoped to cause (as he put it in a letter to his wife) “maximum carnage + death.” He wanted this to be yet another jihad mass murder attack on American soil, in which he would be, as he wrote in the same letter, “martyred in the path of Allah.” He said that he wanted to “commit an act of violent jihad on behalf of al Qaeda” against the United States. Loewen also freely acknowledgedthat he would be classified as an Islamic “extremist”: “Let me preface the bottom line by saying I have become ‘radicalized’ in the strongest sense of the word, and I don’t feel Allah wants me any other way.”
In the same vein, he expressed frustration with Muslims who didn’t see the jihad imperative as he did: “I don’t understand how you can read the Qur’an and the sunnah of the Prophet (saw) and not understand that jihad and the implementation of Sharia is absolutely demanded of all the Muslim Ummah. I feel so guilt-ridden sometimes for knowing what’s required of me but yet doing little or nothing to make it happen. I love my Muslim brothers and sisters, whether they agree with me or not, it’s just hard to deal with the denial that some of them appear to be going through.”
Loewen is not associated with any religious group in Wichita, Grissom said. Semantics. Other news outlets are reporting he'd recently converted to Islam; while he may not be associated with a group in Wichita (doubtful) he could be associated with a radical, fanatic Islamic group.
