15 April, 1995 Professor Norma Esparza and the Murder of Gonzalo Ramirez The murder of Gonzalo Ramirez is being called a 'revenge killing.' A 20-year-old Esparza was at a bar with a group of friends, including former boyfriend Gianni Van, when she pointed out Ramirez, claiming he had raped her in her dorm room at Pomona College a few months before. Kody Tran, his wife Diane Tran, and Shannon Gries followed and bumped his truck. A plan to kidnap him turned into murder . Ramirez was found on the side of an Orange County road hacked to death with a meat cleaver Esparza says she was forced to marry Van so she would not have to testify against him. After a divorce, she became a psychology professor in Geneva, Switzerland, but was arrested when she returned to the US for a conference. Kody Tran committed suicide in July during a standoff with police in Irvine, but the others have been arrested.
November 29, 2013 Esparza went public from jail on television about the charges, she has refused a plea deal for 3 years if she admits she is guilty.

Gianni Van, 43, was arrested in Costa Mesa and was charged with murder and conspiracy.

Kody Tran was also a suspect in the case, but killed himself on July 12, 2012 of in his Irvine home during a standoff with police as he was being investigated in connection with the Ramirez slaying.

The suspects in the case are Esparaza, the 44-year-old Van, 42-year-old Shannon Ray “Jailbird” Gries, and 45-year-old Diane Tran, who owns the auto repair shop where Ramirez was attacked. Tran’s husband was a fifth suspect, but was killed in a police shootout last year.
All four suspects have pleaded not guilty.
Diane Tran, 44, was arrested in Irvine and was charged with murder and conspiracy.
