Kidnap Hostage | Asian
September 1, 2010 James J. Lee Discovery Hostage Gunman 43-year-old James Lee, armed with two starter pistols and an explosive device, took three people hostage in the headquarters of Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States. After nearly four hours, Lee was shot dead by police and all the hostages were freed. Lee's motive was believed to have been grounded in environmental activism. The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland has since labeled the crime a terrorist attack. Lee had previously been arrested in 2008 for disorderly conduct after throwing money at a crowd at the same location.

This afternoon, a man carrying a gun and what appeared to be two tanks strapped to his back walked into Discovery Channel’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, fired off a couple rounds and took a hostage. Little is known about the man thus far. Except that his name is James Lee, an Asian man with a years-long vendetta against the cable network who may live just up the road from us.
In 2008, Lee was arrested for disorderly conduct by Montgomery County police after a lengthy protest outside of the company’s headquarters. Lee was upset by what he saw as a pro-capitalist, anti-environmental agenda in Discovery’s shows.
Lee spent thousands of dollars in local newspapers advertising the protest. He also hired homeless people to stand next to him to make it appear as if he had a larger group of demonstrators and threw money into the air while saying “money is nothing, money is trash.”

Almost everyday, Discovery Channel gunman and hostage-taker James J. Lee sat down for coffee and chats with a small group at a Borders Café to discuss world issues.
Even those who say they knew Lee well didn't know where exactly he lived, or what he did -- only that he had money from an inheritance, and passion for environmentalism, that at times, was scary. Lee was known for his strong beliefs on population control and his hatred for the Discovery Channel's programming.
ABC 7 obtained home video of Lee debating with a friend, Yaya Fanusie. "What guarantees do you have? What guarantees do you have?" Lee asked. "Faith," someone replies. "Faith isn't much of a guarantee," Lee said.
Fanusie says he was part of the small group that met almost daily at the coffee shop. He says Lee grew concerned whenever children were discussed..

Two years James Jay Lee was arrested for throwing money in the front of the same Discovery Channel offices, where is holding hostages now.
Below is a video capturing the mayhem he created then.
Lee discussed the organization of the protest and his subsequent arrest in this forum under the username 'misterfifteen'. His last entry was:
Yeah, I guess the world did not get saved that week as I had hoped. Was that a failure? Probably. Imagine the police holding me for 2 whole weeks!!! They threw me in the nuthouse for 4 days without bond and then continued to hold me for 2 weeks total until they could 'verify' my address and threw me in a homeless shelter. It was total bullshit. Anyway, my trial is set for March 21 next Friday at 830am Room 401, District Court of Maryland 8552 Second Ave, if anyone wants more laffs. I'm represting myself as my own attorney.Check out James Lee's crazy demands
