Saturday May 18, 2013 In the Virginia Damascus Trail Days parade, an elderly man driving one of the last cars in the parade plows into 60 in a crowd of 1,000 people, dragging some victims under his car. Authorities confirmed his condition and he was hospitalized after the incident. The rampage appeared to be unintentional and likely caused by a medical condition, and no charges were sought against the driver identified as Deward Blevins, 86, of Shady Valley, Tennessee.

UPDATE, 5/21: Deward Blevins, 86, is loaded into an ambulance after he crashed his 1997 Cadillac into a crowd of approximately 1,000 people at the Trail Days Hiker Parade in Damascus on Saturday. Chief of Police Bill Nunley says no criminal charges will be pursued against Blevins.

Deward Blevins, 86, of Shady Valley, Tennessee remains in a local hospital as a result of the medical episode he experienced while driving his 1997 Cadillac in the parade. Blevins lost control of the car and plowed into a crowd of an estimated 1,000 people, injuring 60 of them, some critically. Damascus Chief of Police said Monday evening that his department was not planning on pursuing criminal charges against Blevins after receiving his medical records and confirming his medical condition.

Jennifer Windisch's camper was parked right next to the bridge, and she tells us it was simply chaos. "Hearing the 'thuds,' it was like you knew something wasn't right," she said. Police believe the driver of the 1997 Cadillac that hit the hikers could have had some kind of medical emergency and was going 15 to 25 miles per hour. Few details are being released about the driver, but we did learn he's a Shady Valley, Tennessee resident in his 80s who was a previous Appalachian Trail hiker wanting to take part in this year's parade. "There's always the possibility of charges, but we're too early in the investigation," Chief Nunley said of the man.

Officials did not have a formal confirmation or any specifics on the condition, but based on the accounts of authorities and witnesses on the scene, they are confident the issue was medical, according to Pokey Harris, Washington County's director of emergency management.
