Parties urge strict investigation into leftist lawmaker's alleged treason
GlobalPost·21

SEOUL,
Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- Rival political parties on Thursday called for a strict
investigation into a leftist lawmaker's alleged plot to overthrow the government
as court officials began deliberations over whether to place him under
arrest.
Rep.
Lee Seok-ki of the minor opposition Unified Progressive Party was detained by
agents of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on Wednesday, hours after the
National Assembly voted in an overwhelming majority to allow his
arrest.
Lee
is accused of leading a secret organization with suspected links to North Korea
and plotting to destroy key infrastructure facilities in the South in the event
of an inter-Korean war, including communication lines and railways.
His
detention was subject to parliamentary approval as lawmakers in South Korea are
immune from arrest while the Assembly is in session.
"Now,
the cause of (the scandal) should be determined in depth, and the source of
responsibility clearly identified," Rep. Hwang Woo-yea, the chief of the ruling
Saenuri Party, said at a Supreme Council meeting.
The
main opposition Democratic Party (DP) also called for a fair and strict
investigation into the case, but warned the ruling party against using the
scandal to divert public attention from allegations that the NIS meddled in last
year's presidential election in the ruling party's favor.
"The
only way for the Saenuri Party to erase suspicions ... is for it to stop its
slander against opposition parties and promise to join efforts to overhaul the
NIS in line with the public's demands," Rep. Jun Byung-hun, the DP floor leader,
said at a party policy meeting.
