    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terrorism in Burma (also known as Myanmar) primarily consists of anti-government militant activity. Militant separatists inIndia, such as the United Liberation Front of Assam and the United National Liberation Front, have bases in Burma from which they launch attacks.[1]
Notable incidents include the 1983 Rangoon bombing, allegedly by North Korean agents, and three bombings on May 7, 2005 in the capital which killed 11 and injured more than 150. Ethnic rebels were blamed.[2]

An explosion in a car parked yards away from a radical Buddhist monk wounded four people at a mass sermon in northern Myanmar, police said on Monday. The unexplained blast went off late on Sunday in Myanmar's second-biggest city, Mandalay, according to police and witnesses. It took place during a ceremony conducted by Wirathu, a prominent anti-Muslim monk who once called himself "the Burmese bin Laden".
mass sermons held by Wirathu, the chief proponent of a grassroots movement known as 969. The movement has been accused of stirring anti-Muslim sentiment in a deeply Buddhist nation, where curbs on freedom of speech and assembly have eased since the end of military rule two years ago. Government officials were unavailable for comment. President Thein Sein's office has described 969 as a "symbol of peace" and Wirathu as "a son of Lord Buddha".
At least 237 people have been killed in Myanmar in religious violence over the past year and about 150,000 people displaced. Most of the victims were Muslim and the most deadly incidents happened in Rakhine State, where about 800,000 Rohingya Muslims live, according to the United Nations

About 200 people have been killed by violence since religious riots erupted in June 2012 and tens of thousands fled after homes owned were burned by mobs
he does not advocate violence against Muslims, who make up just 5 percent of the country's 60 million people. "I believe Islam is a threat not just for Buddhism, but for the people and the country and the religion," he said ... Last month, TIME magazine's portrayal of Wirathu as "The Face of Buddhist Terror" sparked widespread protests across the country.
Tensions are highest in the western state of Rakhine, which borders predominantly Muslim Bangladesh. Rakhine has long been the scene of conflict between rival ethnic groups but sectarian violence has increasingly been breaking out in other parts of the country. In May, Buddhist mobs burned Muslim homes in the northern city of Lashio.
        • Fears for thousands after 'near total destruction' of Myanmar city's Muslim quarter
        • A human rights group expressed concern for the safety of thousands of Muslims on Saturday after revealing satellite images of a once-thriving coastal community reduced to ashes during a week of violence in western Myanmar.
The images released by the New York-based Human Rights Watch show "near total destruction" of a predominantly Rohingya Muslim part of Kyaukpyu, one of several areas in Rakhine state where battles between Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists threaten to derail the former Burma's fragile democratic transition.
More than 811 buildings and houseboats were razed in Kyaukpyu on Oct. 24, forcing many Rohingya to flee north by sea toward the state capital Sittwe, Human Rights Watch said
A Rakhine government spokesman put the death toll at 112 as of Friday. But within hours state media revised it to 67 killed from Oct. 21 to 25, with 95 wounded and nearly 3,000 houses destroyed.
