2009 Iran hired Mohammed Reza Sadeqinia, AKA Sadeghnia, an unemployeed painter and longtime resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan to kill a London-based Voice of America commentator, Ali Reza Nourizadeh and a Los Angeles-based radio host Jamshid Sharmahd, for the opposition group Tondar' who lived in nearby Glendora, California, for calling for the overthrow of the Iranian government. Cables obtained by WikiLeaks confirmed an unidentified Iranian man got cold feet and turned himself in to Glendora police, and was arrested near the Los Angeles airport. Another leaked cable showed that in 2009, the American Embassy in London warned U.S State Department officials to be on the look out for Iranian assassin. The scheme at first was to shoot the victim, but later centered on running him over with a van. Sadeginia was released after serving 8 months and placed on five years probation. He was granted permission to return to Iran while on probation to see his ailing father, but he never came back. An Iranian-American -- a 71-year-old California businessman named Reza Taghavi -- was being held in an Iranian prison for donating to the same Iranian dissident group Tondar, and he released suddenly released a short time later in what security experts say looks like a prisoner swap. Details were released in 2011.
