Assassination of Father Fausto Tentorio in Philippines

Assassination of Father Fausto Tentorio in Philippines

October 17 2011 Italian priest Father Fausto Tentorio was gunned down by Jimmy Ato in North Cotabato in the Philippines where he was serving as parish priest. Tentorio was shot several times with a 9mm pistol as he was getting into his pickup truck at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Arakan town. The gunman fled with his brother on a motorcycle. The priest was the third Italian Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME) priest shot in Mindanao, and the second in the Diocese of Kidapawan. The National Bureau of Investigation arrested suspect Jimmy Ato in a remote village in Arakan in North Cotabato province. He shot at police but nobody was injured. Witnesses identified Ato, who is also wanted for a separate case of arson and homicide. A Catholic spokesman for the PIME stated that the true masterminds of the murder and motives are unknown, as their missionaries in the Arakan Valley have never had contact with the two suspects who belong to another tribe who are not the local Manobo that Fr. Tentorio worked with.

A group calling itself THE JUSTICE for Fr. Fausto ‘Pops’ Tentorio Movement called it the 54th extrajudicial killing of the Aquino government and blamed the Armed Forces of the Philippines, calling for pulling out all military units from Arakan.

Justice for Father Pops calls the slain missionary a martyr and the 54th extajudicial killing victim under the Aquino government.
Or it could be a conspiracy theory blaming the government when anti-government rebels did it.

JOIN the thousands in commemorating Fr. Pops' Life and Martyrdom on 1st Death Anniversary

Invitation
October 14, 2012 JOIN the thousands in commemorating Fr. Pops' Life and Martyrdom on 1st Death Anniversary   In commemoration of the 1st Death Anniversary of   of Fr. Fausto “Pops” Tentorio on October 17,  slain Italian Missionary,54th ExtraJudicial Killing Victim under the Aquino Government,  the Justice for Fr. Fausto “Pops”Tentorio Movement enjoin all our friends in the media to join us in remembering his life, mission and martyrdom.

Prior to the start of the session, the UPR Watch delegates flashed their I-Pads bearing calls to end extrajudicial killings and impunity in the Philippines. “The questions raised by the foreign missions were nearly identical to the questions we have submitted to them prior to the UN session. Human rights defenders, the victims and their families have submitted reports that belie the overstated achievements of the Philippine government. We count 76 victims of extrajudicial killings since Aquino took office. While the PH government now claims a dramatic decline in the killings, – no thanks to its supposed efforts – our data shows that the PH government has not lived up to its commitment to eliminate these violations altogether,” said Karapatan chair Marie Enriquez

Government prosecutors have entertained the possibility that state agents were behind thekilling of Italian missionary Fr. Fausto Tentorio, in Arakan, North Cotabato.
Baraan said they have also been asked to look into what has happened to other cases of extralegal killings where the victims, like Tentorio, were known to be actively involved in human rights and related issues.
He said it is unjust that government resources and weapons would be used in killing hapless civilians.
“But I could not give a categorical statement for now,” the official added.
Meanwhile, various groups paid tribute yesterday afternoon for the slain priest at the Assumption Church in Davao City.
Religious groups, progressive organizations, his scholars, friends and close colleagues whom Tentorio had worked as a missionary in the communities of North Cotabato and in Davao del Norte, came to recall what he had shared to them.
“Pops had always been the person the people in Arakan can ask for help. From food, work, education, building, day care center, wedding of a daughter, hospitalization of a child, whatever it is, Pops always comes to share his blessings,” said Pedro Gumanao, a leader of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas.
Gumanao alleged that in 2003 a group called Alamara-Bagani had wanted to kill the priest but he was protected by the Lumads.
“When I learned of his death through a text message, I couldn’t help but feel like it is the end of the world. Pops had been really very supportive of the people. In fact, when he arrived in Arakan, the place was not yet a municipality, and the road was a major problem, so he went about fixing the road and providing water system for the people,” he added.
In another testimony, Jun Lubiano, a staffer of Pops said: “There can be no other reason for Pops’ killing but his firm stand against development aggression. He was a member of the Arakan Municipality’s Peace and Order Committee but in 2007, the military had requested the local government to opt him out because he was very vocal against the militarization in the area.”

We are aware that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was quick to make defensive comments and even already projected their innocence this early. Let us all be reminded that the arrest has not absolved any entity, least state security forces.

This is in spite of the fact Known to the public already that Fr. Pops had been receiving threats before he was murdered from paramilitary groups backed by the AFP and the fact that Fr. Pops was vocal against against militarization in Arakan for over decades.

The continuing military harassment and threats against civilians in Arakan, particularly victimizing those who are directly associated with Fr. Pops are proof enough of the AFP’s effort to silence the community. The killing of Ramon Batoy and the arrest of civilians after the killing of Fr. Pops are all executed by the AFP as a way to sow fear among those who will speak ill against the AFP.

All of these threats and incidents are closely tied to Fr. Pops’ death, far from what the AFP claims.

We have long cried and now reiterate that if the authorities are really determined to bring justice to Fr. Pop’s death they must take steps to restrain, by pulling out, all military units in Arakan, and in order to end the reign of impunity in Arakan and subsequently provide an atmosphere of safety and trust.
