China school explosion kills two

September 9, 2013 Initially reported as an accident, a suicide bomber detonated a 3 wheel motorized bicycle with a A homemade bomb in front of a primary school in a Guilin, a southern resort Chinese. It killed at least two people including the driver and injured 17 including 10 school children. One boy lost a leg. The explosion set other vehicles ablaze and shattered seventh-floor windows. Compared to the 2010, a series of seemingly unrelated school attacks by people armed with knives, including a man who attacked children with a hammer and then set fire to himself.

The death and injury tool was comparable to the  Boston Marathon pressure cooker bomb

   Compiler's note: Terrorism, as a general rule, targets non-combatants--including men, women, and children. However, terrorist attacks specifically targeting children over other non-combatants are uncommon. Most terrorists have also traditionally avoided mass casualty terrorism. In either case, the shock value is so great that such attacks erode support for the terrorists' political objectives. The 9/11 attacks represent an increasing trend in mass casualty terrorism. At the same time policymakers are examing this evolving threat, they must increasingly consider the threat of terrorist attacks targeting children. In particular, the 2004 school attack in Beslan, Russia, has heightened awareness of a potentially developing threat. More recently, Afghanistan has seen 20 poison gas attacks on girls' schools in 2009-2010, and 16 poison attacks at (mostly) girls' school in 2012, resulting in a total of 2,055 injuries--although it has been suggested that some of these "attacks" may be mass hysteria.

   This page identifies the following types of incidents:

   • terrorist attacks in which the targets were preferentially children,
   • attempted terrorist attacks preferentially targeting children,
   • terrorist attacks which produced very high casualties among children, and
   • non-terrorist criminal acts which are relevant in terms of methodology and child victims.

   As possible, descriptions indicate ages of victims to clarify the possibly ambiguous term "children." This list is far from complete; more data from the United States and Israel is included in part for reasons of data availability and in part due to the particular policy impacts of these attacks. High numbers of child casualties are not unique to these countries, with terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka being a particular example. Corrections are welcome.

At least two people were killed and 17 others, including 10 children, injured when a three-wheeled truck caught fire and exploded outside a school in southern China, state media reported.

Initial reports from the scene in the resort city of Guilin described the blast as an accident, although police declined to confirm that, saying only that an investigation was continuing.

One of the injured pupils was in said to be in a critical condition.

The explosion struck about 7am local time as youngsters were arriving at Balijie Primary School, which is near a four-lane road in urban Lingchuan county.

The other seven injured were adults who had been dropping children off at the start of classes.

The official Xinhua News Agency and state broadcaster CCTV cited eyewitnesses as saying a motorised flatbed tricycle caught fire as it was passing the school and then exploded, setting other vehicles on fire and blowing out the windows in nearby cars and buildings. Such tricycles are frequently used to transport goods in smaller Chinese cities
