Lawsuit filed after mentally ill white teen girl Kristiana Coignard shot and killed attacking cops with knife in police station in Texas

January 22, 2015 Cops cleared and lawsuit filed after mentally ill white teen girl Kristiana Coignard shot and killed attacking cops with knife in police station in Texas  At a police station in Longview, Texas, officers Glenn Derr and Grace Bagley shot and killed 17-year-old Kristiana Coignard after she was not stopped after officer Gene Duffie fired a taser at her. Police said that Coignard had “I have a gun” written on her hand. Protesters and pundits from Libertarians and socialists question why it was neccessary to kill the girl. The parents believe she was there with a knife and note saying she had a gun just to ask for help. Her father said she was cooperative and subdued for many minutes, so ""I know that it was asking for help, that was her intent” .  After investigation by Texas rangers, grand jury did not charge the officers. Because she was mentally ill, her family is seeking "justice" filed a $10 million federal lawsuit claiming her rights under the Disabilities Act were violated, and  that they just want training to be revised.  Her death sparked demonstrations and Anonymous “hacktivists” attacked the city website.

UPDATE: After grand jury decides not to charge officers, Kristiana Coignard's family files $10 million ... KYTX Jul 6, 2015 - UPDATE: Attorneys for Kristiana Coignard's family filed the federal lawsuit in the Marshall Division of the Eastern Texas District Tuesday ...  family is seeking $10 million in the suit, claiming that officers used excessive force and that Coignard’s civil rights were violated. The lawsuit cites the Fourth Amendment and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act to support its claims.  grand jury viewed surveillance video and heard testimony from Texas Rangers before deciding not to charge the three officers involved, finding that the use of deadly force was authorized under state law. “I just really want them to have proper training, actual physical scenario training” said Elizabeth Coignard, Kristiana’s stepmother. “And I'd like it to be required before they even graduate from the police department.”

 17-Year-Old Girl Shot Dead By Three Cops At Texas Police Station JAN 26, 2015 Think Progress Police say the girl was “brandishing a weapon” before she was shot four times. Officers in Longview were involved in two fatal shootings in 2014, including one involving a 15-year-old. In both instances, the officers were cleared by a grand jury.

related but apparently unconnected cases: In 2014, Longview police shot and killed 15-year-old Justin Michael Aguilar and 23-year-old Regan Marshall Wagner in separate incidents. In both cases, the officers were cleared by a Gregg County grand jury.
