1 killed1 arrested Friday August 28, 2015 Deputy Sheriff Darren H. Goforth, Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth was shot "execution-style" and killed from ambush shot 15 times with a full magazine from a handgun while pumping gas into his patrol car at a Houston area gas station. Suspect,  a 30-year-old with a minor criminal history named Shannon J. Miles was found by tracking his red pickup truck and finding matching gun and arrested. His mother claims an alibi that he was with her at the time of the shooting so he can't be the gunman. Authorities could find no other conceivable motive other than targeting a random policeman and hatred against police such as that espoused by the Black Lives Matter movement. Miles lived near the scene in an upper middle class newer construction suburban home and had attended the University of Houston

Murder and arrest[edit]

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Goforth, a white male, pulled into a Chevron gas station at the intersection of West Road and Telge Road inCypress,[2] a town about 25 miles from downtown Houston. While he was filling up his car with gas, a black male in a red Ford Rangerwalked up behind him and shot him several times in the back. The man then walked towards Goforth and shot him several more times in the head to ensure his death. The gunmen spent his entire magazine, 15 bullets, killing the deputy sheriff. The attack appeared to be completely unprovoked.[3] The gun used to murder Goforth was described as a large handgun.[4]

The next morning Miles was brought in for questioning as a person of interest after investigators linked his car to the one driven by the killer.[3] He was arrested and charged with capital murder after a handgun he owned was confirmed through ballistics tests to be the same gun used to murder Goforth. Authorities do not believe anyone else was involved in the murder.[5]
Darren Goforth[edit]

Darren Goforth was 47 years old when he was murdered and was a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.[5] He was married to Kathleen[6] and had two children[2] aged 5 and 12 at the time of his murder.[5]

About 30 minutes before the shooting, Goforth had investigated a car accident but investigators do not believe that the accident was related to the shooting.[4]
Shannon Miles[edit]

Miles was charged in connection with the shooting after being questioned as a person of interest and after the car driven by the killer was tracked to his house.[4] He was 30 years old at the time of the shooting and had previous arrests for trespassing and disorderly conduct with a firearm.[3]

Miles lived about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from the scene of the shooting and had attended the University of Houston in 2011 or 2012.[3]
Reaction[edit]

Harris County district attorney Devon Anderson said she felt it was time for the silent majority to come out and support law enforcement. She also said “There are a few bad apples in every profession, that does not mean that there should be open warfare declared on law enforcement.”[5]

Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman denounced the shooting as "senseless and cowardly" and stated that while investigators were not aware of a motive at the moment, it appeared that Goforth was targeted "because he wore a uniform."[4]

The shooting drew comparisons to the murder of two New York city police officers that occurred the year before. The shooting also brought criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement, alleging that they were responsible for inspiring the attack. Hickman stated “We’ve heard ‘black lives matter.’ All lives matter. Well, cops’ lives matter, too. So why don’t we just drop the qualifier and just say ‘lives matter,’ and take that to the bank.”[5]

Texas State Representative Garnet Coleman (D) criticized Hickman and Anderson for "politicizing a death that, I don’t know that anyone knows what was in the mind of the shooter.” Activist DeRay Mckesson tweeted that it was “sad that some have chosen to politicize this tragedy by falsely attributing the officer’s death to a movement seeking to end violence.”[5]
