Monday August 19, 2002 Massive $130M Santana Row Fire in San Jose The City of San Jose, California, experienced the worst fire loss in its history at the huge nearly completed Santa Row shopping center and apartment development. 11 alarms brought in 221 firefighters and 65 pieces of apparatus. After ten years, investigators have still not found any evidence of construction work that could have started the blaze, or any proof that it was intentionally set. It was about a year after the 9/11 attacks, but no media ever speculated that terrorism could have been a motive for an arson attack.

Cause Never Determined for Massive Santana Row Fire in San Jose
On Monday August 19, 2002, the City of San Jose, California, experienced the worst fire loss in its
history. By the time the day was over, 11 alarms would be dispatched to a large structure fire and the
numerous exposure fires ignited by flying embers. Extinguishment required the combined effort of
221 firefighters and 65 pieces of apparatus. Fortunately, no one was killed and there were only minor
injuries sustained by a number of firefighters. At 15:36 hours, a 9-1-1 operator answered a call reporting a fire at the Santana Row development construction site. The caller stated that he could see flames and smoke billowing from the complex. s. The fire loss at the Santana Row complex was approximately $90 million.ve buildings at Moorpark Gardens sustained total structural and content loss. Two additional buildings had fire damage to their wood-shake roofs and experienced interior water damage to contents. In total, 34 housing units affected. stigators pursued two primary possibilities--that the fire was accidental, perhaps being caused
by “hot” work being done as part of normal construction activities, or that the fire was intentionally
set. At the time that this report was written, a final determination of the exact cause of the fire had

The Santana Row fire first was reported at 3:36 p.m., Aug. 19, 2002. The fire destroyed about six of the $500 million project's 42 acres. Only one store, Crate & Barrel, had opened at the time. Located along Stevens Creek Boulevard on the north end of the site, it was upwind of the blaze and spared. Other shops on the verge of completion, including Ann Taylor, Cole Haan and Ben & Jerry's ice cream, were consumed by flames.
There were no injuries, and the cause never was determined.

The site was previously a Town and Country Village. On August 19, 2002, during construction, the largest building at Santana Row (Building 7, "Santana Heights") caught fire. The fire eventually caused $130,000,000 in damage, and embers spread to at least 13 apartment buildings, some with wooden roofs, nearly a mile downwind of the shopping center on Moorpark Avenue, across Interstate 280. The main fire spread to five alarms, while the secondary fires required six alarms. It was the largest structure fire in San Jose's history.[
