Summary: May 24, 2012 42 Federal Way man pleads guilty in May 2012 Seattle Central District Shooting year old Madrona resident and father Justin Ferrari was driving through the intersection in his Volkswagen vanagon with his family on his way to a vacation weekend when he was struck by a bullet. He was a software developer for Zillow. He was the second person killed by an errant bullet this year in Seattle, which has seen 15 homicides in 2012. It was noted has high for a city that had a homicide rate comparable to the 1950s. Arrested in his Federal Way home by SWAT and US Marshalls was Andrew Jermain Patterson who pled guilty in July 2013. Police believe Patterson was aiming at another man across Cherry Street, at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Way, after "another man refused to give him a cigarette and traded insults with Patterson and a couple of other young men". In April 21-year-old Nicole Westbrook, a culinary student was killed in a drive-by shooting in Pioneer Square. On July 1, 2012, 21-year-old Sherry Soth was shot in South Seattle leaving a party. Neither crime has been solved.
Random killing or terrorism with random violence cover story? Lots of these seeming random killings start with an argument that result in the killing of a man, or the excuse that he was trying to kill somebody else he had an argument with. Could somebody be recruiting a lot of people to commit "random" violence? It seems likely the "stray bullet" is just a cover story for a deliberate targeted shooting. Nanh Lap Tran was shooting at multiple cars in St Paul for no apparent reason in what looked like the typical terrorist mass shooting. In this particular case, police did find the man he allegedly had an argument and witnesses who saw the argument, so this probably is just a case of random gang violence.

How police broke the case in slaying of Madrona dad

....Despite multiple dead ends during the two-month investigation, investigators ultimately collected enough pieces of the puzzle, including Metro bus-surveillance videos, interviews, cellphone records and information from a confidential source to arrest Patterson.

In the newspaper’s earlier story on Patterson’s arrest, while it inexcusably refused to name him, it did print a wealth of information about him, including his juvenile arrest history. I suspected that the refusal to name him was coupled with the revelations about his juvenile record....
Another disturbing aspect of the case is the charging of the suspect. According to the report below, the worst sentence Jermain Patterson can face is 15-23 years behind bars. But as some Timescommenters point out, the shooter murdered Ferrari while attempting to murder a different man. Murder committed while committing another felony (attempted murder of the intended victim) is felony murder, for which the traditional sentence is either “life” in prison or the death penalty, depending on the jurisdiction. In many jurisdictions, a killer can get more time for a manslaughter conviction.

A Federal Way man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to second-degree murder in the May 2012 shooting death of Justin Ferrari, a Madrona father who was killed in front of his parents and children by a stray bullet as he drove through an intersection in Seattle’s Central District.
King County prosecutors will ask that Andrew Patterson serve just over 19 years in prison when he is sentenced Aug. 23, said spokesman Dan Donohoe. The sentence recommendation includes a five-year firearms enhancement, he said

...Ferrari’s death — the 15th in Seattle in 2012 — was part of a spate of random violence that sickened the city. A month earlier, 21-year-old Nicole Westbrook, a culinary student who had just moved to Seattle, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Pioneer Square. Then on July 1, 2012, 21-year-old Sherry Soth was gunned down as she was leaving a house party in South Seattle.
Like Ferrari, Westbrook and Soth were not the gunman’s intended targets, police said at the time. Westbrook and Soth’s homicides remain unsolved.
