Tumwater Police Department responds to multiple reports of shots fired

Suspect in attempted carjacking shot by armed civilian

    Updated information following investigation

Tumwater, WA:  On Sunday, June 17, 2018, at approximately 5:00p.m. Tumwater Police Department responded to a series of calls that ended with a fatal shooting of the suspect at a local WalMart store. After an initial investigation, Tumwater detectives have additional information:
The suspect has been identified as Tim Day, a 44-year old white man from McCleary, Washington. The first reported incident occurred in Olympia at about 4:40 p.m. when Olympia Police were notified of a possible carjacking at an area gas station. The suspect approached a family and attempted to take their car, but was not successful. The suspect fled the scene, drove the wrong way on Highway 101, and quickly exited into the City of Tumwater. The suspect drove erratically on Tumwater streets and crashed the vehicle at the intersection of Tyee Drive and Israel Road SW. He then left his car and attempted to carjack at least two other vehicles, fired shots at the vehicles, and demanded owners abandon their  cars. The suspect was successful in carjacking a third vehicle that he drove to WalMart on Littlerock Road.
The suspected entered the store, proceeded to the sporting goods section where he fired at a locked ammunition display case, removed some ammunition, and exited the store. Two shoppers in the store were legally carrying firearms and heard the shots.  The shoppers observed the suspect with a gun, and followed him to the parking lot. The suspect again tried to carjack a vehicle in the parking lot, and shot the driver when he did not comply. The suspect then approached a second car and driver. When the driver backed away, one of the armed citizens shot the suspect who died at the scene. The armed citizen is a 47-year old man from Oakville, Washington. After shooting the suspect, he immediately retrieved his first aid kit from his car and rendered aid to the victim of the attempted carjacking until Tumwater Fire Department and Medic 5 arrived on the scene. The victim was later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, in critical condition.
The Tumwater Police Department thanks the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, the Olympia Police Department, the Lacey Police Department, and the WalMart personnel during this incident and investigation.

    Correction and clarification:
    • The news release of June 17, 2018 described an injured individual as a 16 year old female, but should have been identified as a 16 year old male.
    • A second victim at the Israel Road and Tyee Drive crime scene was treated by medics for minor injuries.
    • The local high school was not involved in the incident at any point.
    • This was designated as a Level 1 Mass Casualty Incident for emergency responders – however, the incident did not result in mass casualties
