- Eric Harris age 17, and Dylan Klebold, aged 18, killed 12 students and 1 teacher, and wounded 26 others, before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, on April 20, 1999. Klebold’s medical records have never been made available to the public. Harris was reportedly rejected by Marine Corps recruiters days before the Columbine High School massacre because he was under a doctor’s care and had been prescribed antidepressant medications Luvox, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor, which he was on at the time he opened fire at Columbine High School. Klebold’s medical records remain sealed, but at least one public report exists of a Klebold friend witnessing him take the antidepressants Paxil and Zoloft.
- Buford Furrows, August 10, 1999: Los Angeles, CA – Was taking prescribed psychiatric drugs for depression and was in a mental hospital before the shootings. 1 Dead, 5 Wounded
- Jeff Weise, age 16, had been prescribed 60 mg/day of Prozac (three times the average starting dose for adults!) when he shot his grandfather, his grandfather’s girlfriend and many fellow students at Red Lake, Minnesota. He then shot himself. 10 dead, 12 wounded. Mar 21, 2005
- Cory Baadsgaard, age 16, Wahluke (Washington state) High School, was on Paxil (which caused him to have hallucinations) when he took a rifle to his high school and held 23 classmates hostage. He has no memory of the event.
- Chris Fetters, age 13, killed his favorite aunt while taking Prozac.
- Christopher Pittman, age 12, Nov. 28, 2001 – Charleston, WV. Murdered both his grandparents while taking Paxil and Zoloft.
- Mathew Miller, age 13, hung himself in his bedroom closet after taking Zoloft for 6 days.
- Kip Kinkel, age 15, (on Prozac and Ritalin) shot his parents while they slept then went to school and opened fire killing 2 classmates and injuring 22 shortly after beginning Prozac treatment.
- Luke Woodham, age 16 (Prozac) killed his mother and then killed two students, wounding six others.
- Michael Carneal (Ritalin), age 14, opened fire on students at a high school prayer meeting in West Paducah, Kentucky. Three teenagers were killed, five others were wounded.
- A young man in Huntsville, Alabama (Ritalin) went psychotic chopping up his parents with an ax and also killing one sibling and almost murdering another.
- Andrew Golden, age 11, (Ritalin) and Mitchell Johnson, aged 14, (Ritalin) shot 15 people, killing four students, one teacher, and wounding 10 others.
- TJ Solomon, age 15, (Ritalin) high school student in Conyers, Georgia opened fire on and wounded six of his class mates.
- Rod Mathews, age 14, (Ritalin) beat a classmate to death with a bat.
- James Wilson, age 19, (various psychiatric drugs) from Breenwood, South Carolina, took a .22 caliber revolver into an elementary school killing two young girls, and wounding seven other children and two teachers.
- Elizabeth Bush, age 13, (Paxil) was responsible for a school shooting in Pennsylvania.
- Jason Hoffman (Effexor and Celexa) – school shooting in El Cajon, California.
- Jarred Viktor, age 15, (Paxil), after five days on Paxil he stabbed his grandmother 61 times.
- Chris Shanahan, age 15 (Paxil) in Rigby, ID who out of the blue killed a woman.
- Michael McDermott, Dec. 26, 2000: Wakefield, MA – Paxil, Prozac & Desyrel (Trazodone). Long psychiatric history. 7 Dead, 0 Wounded.
- Jeff Franklin (Prozac and Ritalin), Huntsville, AL, killed his parents as they came home from work using a sledge hammer, hatchet, butcher knife and mechanic’s file, then attacked his younger brothers and sister.
- Neal Furrow (Prozac) in LA Jewish school shooting reported to have been court-ordered to be on Prozac along with several other medications.
- Kevin Rider, age 14, was withdrawing from Prozac when he died from a gunshot wound to his head. Initially it was ruled a suicide, but two years later, the investigation into his death was opened as a possible homicide. The prime suspect, also age 14, had been taking Zoloft and other SSRI antidepressants.
- Richard Lopez, Jan 10, 2001: Oxnard, CA – Prozac, Paxil and “drugs that helped him go to sleep.” 1 Dead (the perp), 0 Wounded.
- Alex Kim, age 13, hung himself shortly after his Lexapro prescription had been doubled.
- Diane Routhier was prescribed Welbutrin for gallstone problems. Six days later, after suffering many adverse effects of the drug, she shot herself.
- Billy Willkomm, an accomplished wrestler and a University of Florida student, was prescribed Prozac at the age of 17. His family found him dead of suicide – hanging from a tall ladder at the family’s Gulf Shore Boulevard home in July 2002.
- Kara Jaye Anne Fuller-Otter, age 12, was on Paxil when she hung herself from a hook in her closet. Kara’s parents said “…. the damn doctor wouldn’t take her off it and I asked him to when we went in on the second visit. I told him I thought she was having some sort of reaction to Paxil…”).
- Gareth Christian, Vancouver, age 18, was on Paxil when he committed suicide in 2002, (Gareth’s father could not accept his son’s death and killed himself.)
- Julie Woodward, age 17, was on Zoloft when she hung herself in her family’s detached garage.
- Doug Williams, July 8, 2003: North Meridian, FL – Celexa and Zoloft. 6 Dead (including perp), 9 Wounded.
- Jon Romano, age 16, on Xanax, fired a shotgun at a teacher in his New York high school in Feb. 2004: Greenbush, NY –– and had previously spent time in a psychiatry care facility.
- Matthew Miller was 13 when he saw a psychiatrist because he was having difficulty at school. The psychiatrist gave him samples of Zoloft. Seven days later his mother found him dead, hanging by a belt from a laundry hook in his closet.
- Kurt Danysh, age 18, and on Prozac, killed his father with a shotgun. He is now behind prison bars, and writes letters, trying to warn the world that SSRI drugs can kill.
- Hammad Memon, age 15, shot and killed a fellow middle school student. He had been diagnosed with ADHD and depression and was taking Zoloft and “other drugs for the conditions.”
- Matti Saari, a 22-year-old culinary student, shot and killed 9 students and a teacher, and wounded another student, before killing himself. Saari was taking an SSRI and a benzodiazapine.
- Steven Kazmierczak, age 27, shot and killed five people and wounded 21 others before killing himself on Feb. 14, 2008 in a Northern Illinois University auditorium. According to his girlfriend, he had recently beentaking Prozac, Xanax and Ambien. Toxicology results showed that he still had trace amounts of Xanax in his system.
- Finnish gunman Pekka-Eric Auvinen, age 18, had been taking antidepressants before he killed eight people and wounded a dozen more at Jokela High School – then he committed suicide.
- Charles Carl Roberts, Oct. 2, 2006 – Nickel Mines, PA : Antidepressants. 6 Dead (including perp), 5 Wounded.
- Asa Coon, age 14 from Cleveland,OH. Oct. 10, 2007 – shot and wounded four before taking his own life. Court records show Coon was on Trazodone.
- Seung-Hui Cho, age 23, went on a rampage at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. April 16, 2007,killed 32 students and five teachers before committing suicide. Cho was prescribed Paroxetine (Paxil) in 1999, which he took from June 1999 to July 2000. Prescription medications related to the treatment of psychological problems had been found among Mr. Cho’s effects.
- Robert A. Hawkins, 19, killed 9 people and injured 5 on Dec. 5, 2007 in Omaha, Neb. at Westroads Mall. Hawkins, as a ward of the State of Nebraska, On Ritalin and Zoloft since 5 years old. Received extensive care at Cooper — private psychotherapy, family therapy, drug counseling — from 2003 to 2005. “The state estimates it spent more than $265,000 on Mr. Hawkins’s course of treatment. He was admitted to the Piney Ridge Center in Waynesville, Mo. and court records show, he had been hospitalized twice for psychiatric problems, and doctors had diagnosed attention-deficit disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, a mood disorder. Valium was in his system at time of shooting.
- Timothy Johnson, Effexor. Aug. 14, 2008: Little Rock, AR – 2 Dead (including perp), 0 Wounded.
- Christopher Wood, was prescribed antidepressants Bupropion (Wellbutrin), Amitriptyline (Elavil), Nortriptyline (Pamelor) and the antianxiety drugs Zolpidem (Ambien) and Alprazolam (Xanax). Apr. 17, 2009 Middletown, MD – 5 Dead (including perp).
- Jared Lee Loughner, 22, killed 6 people — including the chief federal judge of Arizona, John Roll — andinjured 14 others, including then U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, who was shot in the head on Jan. 8, 2011 in Tucson, Ariz. in a shooting spree outside a grocery store. Kylie Smith, who knew Loughner since he was four years old, told Time Magazine that Loughner frequently used drugs and alcohol, beginning in high school. Court records showed that Loughner was cited for drug paraphernalia possession in October 2007. After his arrest, Loughner was diagnosed with paranoid schizophreniaand was initially ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial.
- Scott Evans Dekraai, 42 , on Trazodone and Topamax. killed 8 people, including his ex-wife, on Oct. 12, 2011 in Seal Beach, Calif. at a beauty salon. According to court records, Dekraai suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Eduardo Sencion, Had been taking psychiatric drugs since his teens and several of the drugs were switched just months before the shooting on Sept. 6, 2011 in Carson City, NV – 5 Dead (including perp), 7 Wounded.
- James Holmes, a graduate student in neuroscience, killed 12 and wounded 70 when he stormed a movie theater airing a late-night premiere of a “Batman” film in Aurora, Colorado, on July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colo. Holmes was using two mind-altering psychiatric drugs during the night of the shooting, including the antidepressant Sertaline, generically known as Zoloft. Zoloft has an FDA “black box” warning, the strongest warning the agency issues, cautioning that the drug can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior. Other dangerous side effects of Zoloft include agitation, irritability, anxiety, hostility, aggressiveness, hallucinations, mania, impulsivity, delusions and apathy. Holmes was also on Klonopin, a drug that was initially designed to treat epileptic seizures by lowering electoral activity in the brain. It shares the same side effects of Zoloft but also can reportedly cause unpredictable reactions in people.
- Michael Hamilton, His dosage of Adderall was doubled just months before shooting on Sept. 8, 2012 in Jackson County, MI – 1 Dead
- Adam Lanza, age 20, killed his mother on December 14, 2012 before shooting and killing 20 children and 8 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. He later committed suicide. According to the website AbleChild, Paul Fox, the psychiatrist who treated Lanza was arrested for sexual misconduct and charged with three felony counts of sexual assault on a then-19-year-old patient for distributing the victim a “dynamic cocktail of psychiatric drugs” and for questionable billing practices and patient records retention. It is unclear what psychiatric diagnoses or what kind of psychiatric “dynamic cocktail” Lanza was prescribed while a patient under Fox’s “care” because the state of Connecticut refuses to release Lanza’s mental health records or autopsy and toxicology results.
- John Zawahri, 23, killed 5 people and wounded several others, and was shot and killed by authorities after a violent spree at Santa Monica College on June 9, 2013 in Santa Monica, Calif. Officials stated Zawahri had no terrorist affiliations, domestic or international, but did confirm to CNN that Zawahri washospitalized for mental illness in recent years.
- Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old information technology employee at a defense-related computer company, used a valid pass on Sept. 16, 2013 in Washington, D.C. to get into the Navy Yard and then opened fire for more than a half hour, killing 12 people before he was slain by police in the shootout. U.S. law enforcement found no evidence to suggest Alexis’ motive was political or religious. But less than a month before the shooting, Alexis, a former Navy reservist visited the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs medical centers twice, seeking treatment for insomnia. He was given Trazodone to help him sleep, and in August 2013, Alexis complained to Rhode Island police that people were talking to him through the walls and ceiling of his hotel rooms and sending microwave vibrations into his body to deprive him of sleep.
- Elliot Rodger, 22, killed 6 college students and wounded 7 others on May 23, 2014, at the start of Memorial Day weekend, stabbing three then shooting and running people down in his BMW near the University of California, Santa Barbara before shooting himself in the head as he drove. Law enforcement authorities confirmed Rodger, was taking massive doses of Xanax, a psychiatric drug belonging to a class of chemicals called benzodiazepines.
- A 15-year-old gunman (name with-held) On antidepressants – shot 5 students, 4 fatally, before killing himself at Marysville-Pilchuck High School on Oct. 24, 2014 in Marysville, Wash.
- Dylann Storm Roof, 21, killed 9 people at a historic black church on June 17, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina. Court documents reveal Roof was carrying suboxone, a powerful narcotic when authorities confronted and searched him at a mall in Columbia, according to CBS News, four months before the shooting.
- John Russell Houser, 59, killed 3 people and wounded 9 others on July 23, 2015 inside of a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. According to court documents, Houser had a history of mental health “treatment,” and was “prescribed medication to take daily for (manic depressant and bipolar) problems.”
- Christopher Harper-Mercer, killed a professor and 9 students in a classroom, and wounded 9 others, at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon October 1, 2015. It was documented that Mercer was taking five types of medication at the time of the shooting.
- Robert Lewis Dear, Jr., killed a police officer and 2 civilians at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Nov. 27, 2015. Five police officers and four civilians were also injured. Dear wasfound mentally incompetent to stand trial.
- James Hodgkinson, opened fired at a GOP congressional baseball practice wounding Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., two Capitol Police officers and one congressional staffer. He was fatally wounded in an exchange of fire with police. Timothy Slater, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, stated that Hodgkinson was taking prescription drugs, but he did not disclose what the drugs were.
- Cedric Ford, 38, killed three people at his former place of employment and wounded 15 random strangers on Feb. 25, 2016 in Hesston, Kansas. Ford was killed by police. The autopsy showed Ford was under the influence of high levels of methamphetamine and alcohol at the time of the mass shootings. A standard dose of meth, when it is prescribed as an antidepressant by physicians, is 12.5 milligrams. Ford had more than 135 times a standard dose of methamphetamine in his system at the time of the shooting.
- Omar Mateen, a Florida security guard, killed 49 people inside Pulse, an LGBT nightclub in the city of Orlando on June 12, 2016. Mateen was killed in a gun battle with police. It was widely reported in the media that Mateen had bipolar disorder and was obsessed with researching psychiatric medications. * The massacre was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
- Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, shot 5 people to death and injured 6 others in Fort Lauderdale’s Hollywood International Airport Jan. 7, 2017. He served in the Alaska National Guard. He received a general discharge for unsatisfactory performance in August 2016. The Iraq War veteran claimed his mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency and that he was being forced to watch videos for ISIS, according to the FBI. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital where relatives said he had been receiving psychological treatment.
- Stephen Paddock, 64, killed 58 people, including himself and injured more than 500 people on Oct. 1, 2017, in the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino during a Jason Aldean concert at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Records from the Nevada Prescription Monitoring Program showed Paddock was prescribed an anti-anxiety drug 50 10-milligram diazepam tablets by Dr. Steven Winkler on June 21. The Nevada state monitoring report also noted that Winkler prescribed 50 10-milligram tablets of diazepam to Paddock in 2016. Diazepam is a sedative-hypnotic drug in the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, which studies have shown can trigger aggressive behavior. Chronic use or abuse of sedatives such as diazepam can also trigger psychotic experiences, according to drugabuse.com.
