Col. Kevin Arata, a Fort Bragg spokesman, identified the soldier as Spc. Ricky G. Elder, 27, of Hutchinson, Kan. Elder died Saturday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.
Elder is accused of fatally shooting his battalion commander, Lt. Col. Roy L. Tisdale, during a safety briefing Thursday.
Elder, 27, enlisted in the Army in 2004 and was assigned to 3rd Battalion,
509th Infantry Regiment, Fort Richardson, Alaska; and 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.; before being assigned to 525th BfSB inJune 2010.”. . .”The subject of a criminal investigation has been identified as Spc. Ricky G.Elder, an infantryman from Hutchinson, Kansas. He died of self-inflicted injuries after receiving treatment at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C.
Elder was recently charged with larceny of a toolkit valued at $1,700 and was pending court martial for that charge. Charges had been referred but his hearing had not been scheduled.”. . .”Elder, 27, enlisted in the Army in 2004 and was assigned to 3rd Battalion,
509th Infantry Regiment, Fort Richardson, Alaska; and 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.; before being assigned to 525th BfSB in June 2010.”
“Elder was facing court-martial for larceny charges after he allegedly stole a $1,700 toolkit at Fort Bragg, military officials said.
Elder’s lawyer, Les Hulnick, of Wichita, Kan., told the Observer his client had a pending court case in Kansas. Elder had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aggravated battery for punching a woman in the face at a bar. Hulnick said Elder was due in Reno County court in Kansas Friday for his sentencing hearing.
Hulnick said he was shocked to hear of Elder’s alleged involvement in the Thursday shooting.
“All my dealings with (Elder) were extremely pleasant, and it’s just a heartbreak,” he said. “As far as I could see, he was just a hell of a good soldier, and he made a wrong move in a bar here.”
that clears it. There was no apparent radicalized jihad involvement here, simply a regrettable criminal case of Army officer murdered by another soldier.
