February 9, 2014 Gunman kills two at Russian cathedral, A man who worked as a security guard was instead the attacking gunman who killed two and wounded 6 when he opened fire on worshipers at a Russian Orthodox cathedral on Sakhalin Island off Russia’s Pacific coast. A nun, Lyudmila Pryashnikova, and another man were killed trying to stop the gunman who started firing at icons and worshipers after the service ended. The gunman’s motives were unknown. He was taken into custody where he would be given mental health evaluation. The incident did not appear to be connected to Caucasus militant threats against the Olympics in Sochi, or the attempt to hijack a Turkish airliner to Sochi. It was only days after the February 3rd attack when a Moscow teenager killed a teacher and a policeman and held classmates hostage Russia's first major school shooting, which was also not believed to be connected to terrorism. The media did not note any connection to other attacks on churches and clergy in the middle east or north America.
