6 killed 2 suspects guilty December 24, 2007  Joseph McEnroe and Michele Kristen Anderson Guilty 2007 Carnation WA Murders In  one of the most horrific crimes in Washington state history,  the Carnation murders were a mass murder of six of three generations of suspect's own family members, including two young children. Arrested and convicted were Michele Kristen Anderson and her boyfriend, Joseph Thomas McEnroe, both aged 29 who had jobs in the community. The victims were her parents, Wayne, 60, who worked at Boeing and Judith Anderson, 61 who was a mail carrier; her brother, Scott, and his wife, Erica, both 32; and the couple's two children, Olivia, 5, and Nathan, 3 all shot with a  .357-caliber Magnum handgun.  Victim bodies were discovered two days after the killings, shortly before Anderson and McEnroe drove up to her parents’ home and told authorities they had driven to Las Vegas to get married, but got lost and returned home. Then they changed their stories and confessed. McEnroe had met Anderson online and moved to Washington to marry her. The couple were seen as distant, paranoid and unfriendly. The motive was unclear but police speculated Anderson could have been angry over money issues when  her parents were asking her to pay rent on their trailer. McEnroe’s mother had been searching for her son, and called him a “good Christian”. He told the court that he felt some sort of acceptance with Jehovah's Witnesses, but when stopped studying for ministry when  he felt he had filed and been rejected by God when the he told elders he didn't have a guilt-free conscience.  On March 25, 2015, the jury found Joseph McEnroe guilty of aggravated, 1st degree Murder on all six counts. On May 13, 2015, Joseph McEnroe was sentenced to life or six life sentences avoiding the death penalty. On March 4, 2016, Michele Anderson was found guilty of six counts of aggravated first-degree murder after refusing to talk to her defense lawyers or testify.

Seattle Times: shows they never intended to confess but instead had planned “to stumble onto a murder scene,” not knowing detectives and crime-investigators had already been summoned to the property, he said. ... Anderson blurted out that the deaths were all her fault, but only after “she was caught in lie after lie after lie” during a nearly hourlong conversation with detectives, who quickly became suspicious when neither Anderson or McEnroe asked about the large police and media presence at her parents’ home.

Victims[edit]

Six people were killed:[1]
  • Wayne Scott Anderson, 60, a Boeing engineer and husband of Judy Anderson
  • Judy Anderson, 61, postal worker, and wife of Wayne Scott Anderson
  • Scott Anderson, 32, son of Wayne and Judy
  • Erica Anderson, 32, wife of Scott
  • Olivia Anderson, 5-year-old daughter of Scott and Erica
  • Nathan Anderson, 3-year-old son of Scott and Erica

Crime[edit]

According to testimony, McEnroe and Anderson armed themselves and drove their pickup to the home of her parents, Wayne Anderson, 60, and Judy Anderson, 61, on the afternoon of Dec. 24, 2007.
Once inside, McEnroe distracted Judy Anderson, who was wrapping Christmas gifts, while Michele shot her father. After Michele’s gun jammed, McEnroe then killed Wayne and Judy Anderson.
The two then hid the bodies and carefully cleaned the home and waited for Michele Anderson’s older brother, Scott, his wife, Erica, both 32, and their two young children.
Once the family arrived, Michele Anderson shot her brother. McEnroe and Anderson then shot Erica Anderson and McEnroe shot the children at request of Anderson, 5-year-old Olivia and 3-year-old Nathan, because they didn’t want witnesses and said the children would be scarred for life having seen the parents killed.
The bodies were discovered two days later when a co-worker of Judy Anderson’s went to the home to see why she was absent from work. While King County detectives were at the property, McEnroe and Michele Anderson drove up and were questioned and arrested.
Prosecutors told jurors the motive for the killings was money and Anderson’s belief she had been slighted and mistreated by her parents and brother.
