Murder of Marley Lion by Youths

Saturday, June 16, 2012 Charleston South Carolina: At 4 a.m. officers responded to a shots fired call in the Ardmore subdivision in the Yew Street area. Marley Lion, a recent graduate of Academic Magnet High School who played basketball and lacrosse, was sleeping in the back of his car after driving late when a surveillance video shows a gunman approaching his door. He aimed a gun at the window where Lion was sleeping. The alarm of the vehicle was set off and the gunman briefly retreated. The gunman then returned again and opened fire, killing him. Before dying he told police that two black males approached his car and one shot him several times. The gunman's cover story was that it had nothing to do with race because he was planning to rob a nearby bar when he came across Lion instead. In July, Charleston police arrested four in connection with the shooting when they found a suspect selling the gun that had been used in Marley’s murder. The case went viral on the internet comparing it to the Trayvon Martin case, but Snopes established it was not a racial  bias case worthy of national attention.
