Students Harmed | Vehicle Assault or Accident | Crime
August 29, 2012 Cleo Thiberge, 19, had arrived in the United States the day before as an exchange student from France at Macalester college. She was run over and pinned down by a tire of an SUV driven by Danielle Jeanne Keller and died 3 days later. Keller, age 28, was sentenced to 25 days in jail, home detention or work program, plus a $150 fine a year of probation for a year. Keller had previous convictions of careless driving, going 99 mph in a 70-mph zone, driving after revocation and driving after suspension, according to court records, but most were back in 2004. Keller's lawyer says she "feels terrible" about the accident. Thiberge was crossing the street with the light at the intersection when she was run over by Keller, who was making a right turn, and claimed she looking in the opposite direction. Keller told police that she worked as a mechanic nearby, and was test-driving a customer's car to make sure the brakes were working properly after repairs
Her lawyer: "she was not careless to a degree that's criminally negligent," he said. "Sometimes it's just an accident."
