For some reason, Russia and Cuba don't enter into the motive behind the JFK assassination.
1 killed suspect arrested and killed November 22, 1963 Lee Harvey Oswald JFK Assassination Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot by a sniper while traveling with his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and Connally's wife Nellie, in a presidential motorcade. A ten-month investigation from November 1963 to September 1964 by the Warren Commission concluded that Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, and that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial.
Oswald was certainly the lone shooter, but was he alone? He was driven by communist ideology like Nidal Hasan was driven by jihad ideology and was also a "lone gunman" who talked to jihad leaders Few say the he or his wife were Soviet agents, but they could be right, as the "communist killed Kennedy" may be the least known, but most realistic "conspiracy theory". Mainstream history is that the Russians were not sure Oswald was a spy for America, but they gave him a job and a wife, and he left because he was unhappy. The view is that he was trained to be an assassin by the KGB, and they gave him a wife who was close to, if not actually an agent of the KGB to keep tabs on him, and she may have warned the Soviets to not let him travel to Cuba, a sort of loose cannon that went off just when Russia was swearing off assassination operations after numerous face-offs with Kennedy and the west.
Did Johnson order the cover up of an international communist conspiracy?
President Johnson chose to not pursue ties to Russia because he did not to go to war. The police department had already determined that Oswald was part of a communist international conspiracy, but the federal government covered this up, along with all of the other JFK conspiracy theories which sought to tie Oswald to the CIA, Mafia and government and away from Russia: PBS: 11:26 PM: The original complaint that the police department filed on Oswald, around midnight on the 22nd of November, states that Lee Oswald did, “in furtherance of an international communist conspiracy, assassinate President John F. Kennedy.” President Johnson is afraid that Oswald’s apparent communist connections could spark an international crisis. Johnson orders the district attorney to drop any reference to a communist conspiracy. This is a year after the Cuban missile crisis, when the world had come to the brink of nuclear war. Oswald will be interrogated for two days, but he never confesses.
Marina: Although she once told the Warren Commission investigating Kennedy's assassination that she was convinced of Oswald's guilt, she now says that she believes there was a conspiracy - perhaps involving organized crime - behind JFK's death.
Was Oswald working for the CIA, KGB or both?

spy? KGB (frontline) "We concluded that he was not working for American intelligence. His intellectual training experience and capabilities were such that it would not show the FBI and the CIA in a good light if they used people like him."
It should be obvious that conspiracy theories trying to shift blame away from Oswald and towards the CIA are efforts to hide Russian involvement in the assassination. Oddly, Mark Lane and other assorted characters also have floated conspiracy theories that the US government not only killed JFK, but also RFK and Martin Luther King Jr, yet unlike JFK, nobody has ever established even a shadow of a link between Russia and the RFK MLK killings other than noting the same cast of conspiracy theorists must be hiding somebody, and must be working for somebody either the same or different from JFK case.

- Assasination agent: weeks before met with a Soviet assassination agent, newly released documents show. conspiracy theories exist, including the idea that the assassination was a Soviet plot. documents shows that Oswald did meet a Soviet agent, that the U.S. was keeping tabs on him and that Moscow raised questioned about Oswald's mental state. Soviet Embassy in Mexico City, where he spoke with the consul there, Valeriy Vladimirovich Kostikov, according to a CIA memo that reported an intercepted phone call made by Oswald. The meeting took place on September 28, 1963, and the CIA documented it when intercepting a call Oswald made to the Soviet Embassy on October 1, mentioning his visit. During the phone conversation between Oswald and a guard who answered the phone, Kostikov was not only head of the consular section but also “an identified KGB officer” where he served in Department 13—a unit “responsible for sabotage and assassination.” J. On the Kennedy assassination, the deceptions began in 1964 with the Warren Commission. The C.I.A. hid its schemes to kill Fidel Castro and its ties to the anti-Castro Directorio Revolucionario Estudantil, or Cuban Student Directorate, which received $50,000 a month in C.I.A. support during 1963.
In August 1963, Oswald visited a New Orleans shop owned by a directorate official, feigning sympathy with the group’s goal of ousting Mr. Castro. A few days later, directorate members found Oswald handing out pro-Castro pamphlets and got into a brawl with him. Later that month, he debated the anti-Castro Cubans on a local radio station.

A single shot is fired through the window of Ret. General Walker's study, just missing him. Oswald does not return home that night until about 11:30, according to Priscilla Johnson McMillan (a friend of Marina's and author of Marina and Lee). McMillan says that according to Marina, "Lee came in -- white, covered with sweat, and looking quite wild in the eyes. And he said, 'I shot Walker.'" Oswald explained to Marina that he had jumped on a bus, buried the rifle and then he'd taken another bus. And he said when he took the bus, "There they lose the scent." When the radio broadcasts that a boy on the spot had seen one or two cars in the alleyway behind Walker's house, Oswald laughed, according to Marina. He exploded in laughter and said, "Americans are so spoiled. They think you always have to have a car, whereas I got away on my own two feet."
The Walker case would not be resolved until after the Kennedy assassination, when Marina tells her story and the Walker bullet is linked to Oswald's ammunition. No co-conspirators were ever identified.

Killing Kennedy - left note for wife asking to send any news articles to the russian embassy
When Oswald didn't come home on the night of April 10, 1963, Marina went into his study -- which he had told her never to enter -- and found this note, written in Russian. That night Oswald had attempted to assassinate General Edwin Walker, a virulent anti-Communist. Oswald had prepared a book of operations for the plan, including photos of Walker's house, the place where he would hide the rifle, maps, and documentation that laid out his reasons for killing Walker. Oswald viewed Walker as a potential Hitler and saw himself leaving a mark on history if he were to kill Walker.
The Walker case would not be resolved until after the Kennedy assassination, when Marina Oswald told her story and the Walker bullet was linked to Oswald's rifle. No co-conspirators were ever identified.

Edwin Walker assassination attempt[edit]
In March 1963, Oswald purchased a 6.5 mm caliber Carcano rifle by mail-order, using the alias "A. Hidell",[73] as well as a .38Smith & Wesson Model 10 revolver by the same method.[74]
The Warren Commission concluded that on April 10, 1963, Oswald attempted to kill retired U.S. Major General Edwin Walker, firing his rifle at Walker through a window, from less than 100 feet (30 m) away, as Walker sat at a desk in his home; the bullet struck the window-frame and Walker's only injury was bullet fragments to the forearm.[75] (The United States House Select Committee on Assassinations stated that the "evidence strongly suggested" that Oswald carried out the shooting.)[76]
General Walker was an outspoken anti-communist, segregationist, and member of the John Birch Society. In 1961, Walker had been relieved of his command of the 24th Division of the U.S. Army in West Germany for distributing right-wing literature to his troops.[77][78] Walker's later actions in opposition to racial integration at the University of Mississippi led to his arrest on insurrection, seditious conspiracy, and other charges. He was temporarily held in a mental institution on orders from President Kennedy's brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, but a grand jury refused to indict him.[79]
Marina Oswald testified that her husband told her that he traveled by bus to General Walker's house and shot at Walker with his rifle.[80][81] She said that Oswald considered Walker to be the leader of a "fascist organization."[82]
Before the Kennedy assassination, Dallas police had no suspects in the Walker shooting,[83] but Oswald's involvement was suspected within hours of his arrest following the assassination.[84] (A note Oswald left for Marina on the night of the attempt, telling her what to do if he did not return, was not found until early December 1963.)[85][86][87] The Walker bullet was too damaged to run conclusive ballistics studies on it,[88] but neutron activation analysis later showed that it was "extremely likely" that it was made by the same manufacturer and for the same rifle make as the two bullets which later struck Kennedy.[n 7]
George de Mohrenschildt testified that he "knew that Oswald disliked General Walker."[89] Regarding this, De Mohrenschildt and his wife Jeanne, recalled an incident that occurred the weekend following the Walker assassination attempt. The De Mohrenschildts testified that on April 14, 1963, just before Easter Sunday, they were visiting the Oswalds at their new apartment and had brought them a toy Easter bunny to give to their child. As Oswald's wife, Marina was showing Jeanne around the apartment, they discovered Oswald's rifle standing upright, leaning against the wall inside a closet. Jeanne told George that Oswald had a rifle, and George joked to Oswald, "Were you the one who took a pot-shot at General Walker?" When asked about Oswald's reaction to this question, George de Mohrenschildt told the Warren Commission that Oswald "smiled at that."[90] When George's wife, Jeanne was asked about Oswald's reaction, she said, "I didn't notice anything"; she continued, "we started laughing our heads off, big joke, big George's joke."[91] Jeanne de Mohrenschildt testified that this was the last time she or her husband ever saw the Oswalds.[92]
Who, if anyone, knew that Lee Harvey Oswald was an assassin prior to November 22,1963?
Answer:
On April 10, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald attempted to assassinate General Edwin Walker, a right- wing leader in Dallas with a high-powered rifle, after aborting a previous attempt on April 5th. The evidence of this assassination attempt includes the testimony of his wife, Marina Oswald,, a note in his handwriting Russian describing what Marina should do, after the Walker shooting, if he were arrested, killed or had to go into hiding, photographs of Walker's house from the sniper's position taken by Oswald's camera and pasted into Oswald's scrapbook, and a Neutron Activation test that showed that the metallic elements found in the bullet that was recovered in Walker's home matched the ammunition used in Oswald's rifle in the assassination of Kennedy (This technology for this test, done in 1977, did not exist in 1963). Oswald had told a number of people he knew that someone should shoot Walker a month prior to the shooting, and, on April 5th, when he made his first attempt, he had Marina take a photograph of him dressed in black, armed to kill with a rifle and telescopic sight, and holding in his hand the radical newspaper, The Militant. Those who reportedly knew that he was a self-styled assassin include:

Agent Development Case No 31451 - part 2 of 5 Sergei Mostovshchikov KGB claims it never recruited Lee Harvey Oswald. The KGB claims it never recruited Lee Harvey Oswald, the presumed assassin of President John Kennedy. There is no way to prove it, says Izvestia, but one fact appears to support the KGB assertion - the thick dossier it collected on him. Six volumes would be a bit too much for a KGB recruit. The usual outcome in the latter case would be a "thin and absolutely secret folder." The system of Oswald surveillance appears to have been built "in a spirit of the latest achievements of Soviet counter-intelligence of the early 1960s model." Experts who have studied the dossier say everything was done "very thoroughly" and "cleverly." Eduard Shirkovsky, the present chief of the Byelorussian KGB, says Oswald was watched 24 hours a day. The KGB used every means to garner up information, "except for chemicals and psychotropic drugs." Though, admits Shirkovsky, "some tablets might have been dropped in his glass... but only to make him relax and talk more." The dossier is said to contain no evidence that the KGB ever questioned Oswald. This would appear strange, considering the manner in which Oswald came to stay in the Soviet Union: "it was not every day that American tourists in 1959 so stubbornly insisted on being granted political asylum in the USSR." Oswald arrived in Moscow as a tourist on October 15, 1959. The next day he applied for political asylum and Soviet citizenship. His request was turned down, and he was told to leave the country on October 21. That day he cut open the veins in his left hand in protest and was taken to hospital. He asked the Supreme Soviet for political asylum several more times, and on October 31 was said to have thrown up a row in the American Embassy, publicly renouncing his U.S. citizenship and slapping his passport down on e ambassador's table.

His passport shows that his Soviet entry visa was issued on October 14, a mere forty-eight hours later. Normally, tourist visas took approximately five to seven days to be issued. This unusually rapid issue of Oswald's visa is sometimes cited as evidence of Soviet facilitation of his entry into the USSR. In fact, the situation appears even worse that that: the visa was issued in twenty-four hours or less! Lee Harvey Oswald's 1959 visa application form is still held in Russian archives, but KGB Colonel Oleg Nechiporenko reproduced a photographic copy of it in his 1993 book, Passport to Assassination . In the photo it can be seen that the form is dated and signed by Oswald on October 13, one day later than previously thought. It is unlikely that the Soviet Consular bureaucracy would have allowed Oswald to make a mistake on the dating of the application form. He signed and submitted it on 13 October and within a mere twenty-four hours, the Soviet consulate approved and stamped Oswald's entry visa into his passport. |

asked Castro to tell us what he believes actually happened. I brought up the name of his friend, Oliver Stone, who suggested that it was the CIA and a group of anti-Castro Cubans (I used the term “anti-you Cubans” to describe these forces aligned against Castro) that plotted the assassination. “Quite possibly,” he said. “This is quite possibly so. There were people in the American government who thought Kennedy was a traitor because he didn’t invade Cuba when he had the chance, when they were asking him. He was never forgiven for that.”
So that’s what you think might have happened?
“No doubt about it,” Fidel answered.
Castro tried hard to communicate to the Americans that he had nothing to do with J.F.K.’s death, and as Philip Shenon reports in his new book, A Cruel and Shocking Act: The Secret History of the Kennedy Assassination, Fidel even arranged to be interviewed by a Warren Commission staffer on a yacht in the water off Cuba. “Immediately after the assassination, Castro very justifiably worried that he would be blamed, and he was worried that if he were blamed, there would be an American invasion of Cuba,” Shenon told me. But Castro’s denials were credible, Shenon said. Despite the many arguments advanced by conspiracy theorists, he said, “there is no credible evidence that Castro was involved personally in ordering the assassination.”

THE AMERICAS
What Castro Knew About Lee Harvey Oswald
The official narrative skips tantalizing signs of a Cuban connection.
By MARY ANASTASIA O'GRADY
Nov. 17, 2013 5:53 p.m. ET
In November 1963, Cuban intelligence officer Florentino Aspillaga was posted in a little hut near a Cuban beach where he operated listening equipment trained on Miami and CIA headquarters in Virginia. On the morning of Nov. 22, Mr. Aspillaga—who would defect to the U.S. in 1987—said that he was ordered "to stop all your CIA work, all your CIA work." He was instructed to "put all of my equipment to listen to any small detail from Texas. They told me Texas."
Did Castro know that Lee Harvey Oswald was about to assassinate President Kennedy? Brian Latell, a veteran CIA Cuba analyst who spent 15 hours interviewing Mr. Aspillaga for his newly revised "Castro's Secrets," (Palgrave MacMillan), makes a strong case that he did.
....
Edward Jay Epstein —a renowned expert on the killing of the president and author of the recently released book "The JFK Assassination Diary"— Richard Helms, though not yet CIA director, was "receiving almost daily phone calls from [Attorney General Robert Kennedy ] demanding to know what actions he was [taking] to remove Castro from power." The agency recruited Rolando Cubela, a revolutionary insider, to do the job.
But Cubela was a double agent. And on Sept. 7, just after Cubela agreed to help the Americans, Castro gave an interview to an AP reporter in which he put the U.S. on notice that "aiding terrorist plans to eliminate Cuban leaders" would mean that "they themselves will not be safe."
Castro didn't need to look far for a willing partner to back up those words. It is "known with near certainty," writes Mr. Latell, that Cuba had "opened a dossier" on Oswald in 1959, while he was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, in Southern California. Oswald was enamored of the Cuban Revolution, and he had made contact with the Cuban consulate in Los Angeles.
On Sept. 27, 1963, Oswald checked into the Hotel Comercio in Mexico City for a five-night stay. He tried to get a visa from the Cuban embassy to travel to Havana. He had a fling with an embassy employee and probably spent time with others who were intelligence agents. When his visa was not forthcoming, witnesses said he went on a rant at the embassy, slammed the door and stormed off.
According to Mr. Latell, during his Mexico City stay Oswald twice visited the Soviet consulate where he met with "an officer of the notorious Department 13, responsible for assassination and sabotage operations." The KGB was training Cuban intelligence at the time, and "it seems certain that [Oswald's] intelligence file in Havana was thickening."
Castro's claim about Oswald—in a speech 30 hours after Kennedy was shot—that "we never in our life heard of him" was a lie. Indeed, in a 1964 conversation with Jack Childs —an American communist who had secretly been working for the FBI—Castro let it slip that he knew of Oswald's outburst while at the embassy in Mexico City and said that the ex-Marine had threatened to kill the U.S. president.
When Warren Commission staff asked Ambassador Mann about the Hotel Comercio's reputation as "a headquarters for pro-Castro activities," Mann answered: "it was not known generally at all . . . [but] only in intelligence circles."
For Mann, it was too convenient that Oswald landed at that hotel. He pushed for more information about Oswald's Mexico City sojourn. In his memoir, however, he wrote: "The Embassy received instructions to cease our investigation of Oswald's visit to Mexico and to request that the Mexican government do the same." Mann asked for reconsideration and was denied. The Warren Commission was never told of the CIA plan to take out Castro.

Growing Up As Lee Harvey Oswald's Daughters By Fawn Vrazo, Inquirer Staff Writer
AUSTIN, Texas — Quietly and almost completely out of the public eye, the two children of Lee Harvey Oswald have grown up to lead the most average of American lives. June, the older at 26, is a businesswoman married to a businessman, and they are expecting their first child - Oswald's first grandchild. Rachel, 25, is on the verge of receiving her degree from the University of Texas. She would like to become a nurse. "I'm doing great," June said recently during a brief conversation outside her attractive home in a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb.
... June says that her neighbors do not know her story. Rachel is reluctant to reveal her background to others at the restaurant where she works as a waitress while attending college - she finds that the information makes some, but not all, people "uncomfortable." For Rachel, who looks a great deal like the man she calls "Lee," there has never been a time when she has forgotten who her biological father was. "I can really say I think of it every day,"
- In fact, both girls were popular and active students at Rockwall High School in the small town of Rockwall, north of Dallas, where they were raised by Marina and their stepfather, Ken Porter.
- With the exception of one coach who made June cry by making insinuations about her past, Rachel said, there was never much attention paid to their background while the two were in school.

Testimony Of John A. Mccone And Richard M. Helms
jfkassassination.net/russ/testimony/helms1.htm
- . Have you determined whether or not Lee Harvey Oswald, the suspect in connection with the assassination of President Kennedy, had any connection with the Central Intelligence Agency, informer or indirectly as an employee, or any other capacity?
Mr. McCONE. Yes; I have determined to my satisfaction that he had no such connection, and I would like to read for the record----
Mr. RANKIN. Will you tell us briefly the extent of your inquiry?
Mr. McCONE. In a form of affidavit, I have gone into the matter in considerable detail personally, in my inquiry with the appropriate people within the Agency, examined all records in our files relating to Lee Harvey Oswald. We had knowledge of him, of course, because of his having gone to the Soviet Union, as he did, putting him in a situation where his name would appear in our name file. However, my examination has resulted in the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was not an agent, employee, or informant of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Agency never contacted him, interviewed him, talked with him, or received or solicited any reports or information from him, or communicated with him directly or in any other manner. The Agency never furnished him with any funds or money or compensated him directly or indirectly in any fashion, and Lee Harvey Oswald was never associated or connected directly or indirectly in any way whatsoever with the Agency. When I use the term "Agency," I mean the Central Intelligence Agency, of course.
Representative FORD. Does that include whether or not he was in the United States, in the Soviet Union, or anyplace?
Mr. McCONE. Anyplace; the United States, Soviet Union, or anyplace.
Mr. RANKIN. Mr. McCone, is that the affidavit you are going to supply the Commission in connection with our request for it?
Mr. McCONE. Yes; this is the substance of the affidavit which I will supply to you.
..
Mr. McCONE. As I have already stated, we were never in contact with Oswald. We have no evidence that he was working for or on behalf of the Soviet Union at any time. According to his diary, Oswald did receive a subsidy from the Soviet Red Cross which we assume had the approval of the authorities. Such a payment does not indicate to us that he even worked for the Soviet intelligence services. Furthermore, we have no other evidence that he ever worked for Soviet intelligence.

The plain fact is that if Oswald killed JFK, the CIA failed to perceive he posed a threat to the president. Yet no one at the agency lost their job, or even a promotion, as a result of that indisputable and lethal failure. The CIA hid the whole story and Helms and Angleton served another decade before their illegal activities caught up with them.
But–the agency’s defenders will cry–these patriotic, honest, hard-working civil servants in Langley had no way of knowing the pathetic Oswald was actually one of the most cunning assassins in world history.
Oh wait, the CIA was told he was a potential assassin, according to journalist Edward Epstein.
It is well-known that in April 1963, Oswald took a shot at General Edwin Walker, a cashiered right-wing general and harsh critic of JFK’s allegedly treasonous liberal policies. Oswald had his wife take a picture of him with his rifle and he gave a copy of the photo to his friend, George de Mohrenschildt, an itinerant oil engineer who fed intelligence to the CIA to advance his business interests. On the back of the photo Oswald scrawled the words, “Hunter of fascists, Hah.” Oswald told de Mohrenschildt that he had taken a shot at Walker.
De Mohrenschildt, worried he might be tainted by his association with such a rash character, rushed to tell the local representative of the CIA. The agency did not tell the story to the Warren Commission in 1964 nor did de Mohrenschildt. But de Mohrenschildt did tell it to Epstein in 1976. (And then, in one of those violent plot twists that abound in the JFK assassination story, de Mohrenschildt blew his brains out with a shotgun.)
The official story is that de Mohrenschildt’s information about Oswald’s attempted assassination of Walker never reached the CIA hands in who knew the most about Oswald.
If so, it was a rare moment of inattention to Oswald in L
but the most important JFK revelation since Oliver Stone’s movie ruffled Washington feathers twenty years ago is this: the number of senior CIA officers who knew all about Lee Harvey Oswald before JFK’s assassination was not small.
They included a group of a dozen or so senior undercover officers who reported to deputy director Richard Helms and counterintelligence chief James Angleton.
None of these officers ever acknowledged hearing about Oswald’s attempt to kill Walker. But CIA records declassified since the 1990s demonstrate beyond all doubt they knew a lot about Oswald in the fall of 1963.
These CIA officers knew where Oswald was born and that he had served in the Marines. They knew about his defection to the Soviet Union in October 1959. They knew he had returned with a Russian wife. At least one of them (Angleton) had intercepted and opened Oswald’s mail.
Some of them knew Oswald had been interviewed by the FBI. Angleton’s staff was informed by the FBI about Oswald’s pro-Castro politics and his encounters with a CIA-funded anti-Castro group in New Orleans. They all knew about Oswald’s peculiar trip to Mexico City in October 1963 and his contacts there with suspected Cuban and Russian intelligence officers.
Among the officers in the know about the thoroughly obscure Lee Oswald when President Kennedy was preparing for his trip to Dallas:
–Tom Karamessines, Helms’s trusted deputy;
–Bill Hood, the urbane chief of CIA operations in the Western Hemisphere and a close friend of Angleton’s;
–Jane Roman, a loyal senior aide to Angleton;
–David Phillips, a charismatic protege of Helms and chief of anti-Castro operations outside of the United States;
–John Whitten (aka “John Scelso”), an overabearing senior desk officer for Mexican operations;
–Win Scott, the impressive Mexico City station chief;
–and Anne Goodpasture, Scott’s canny assistant.
Individually and collectively, these covert operators knew that Oswald fit the profile of a security risk to U.S national security in many ways.
Yet when Mexico City station chief Win Scott asked CIA headquarters for its assessment of Oswald in early October 1963, associates of Helms and Angleton’s collaborated in writing a four-page cable to Scott that that concluded with the sage observation that Oswald’s time in the Soviet Union had a “maturing effect” on him.

Kennedy was killed by a communist, not a right wing conspiracy.
- .Claremont Institute The Making of a Martyr by James Piereson President John F. Kennedy was cut down on the streets of Dallas by rifle shots fired by Lee Harvey Oswald, a self-described Marxist, recent defector to the Soviet Union, and ardent admirer of Fidel Castro. A recent poll found that 75% of American adults believe that JFK was the victim of a conspiracy of some kind, usually of a right-wing variety. JFK was a martyr in the Cold War struggle against Communism. Lee Harvey Oswald was not a product of a "climate of hate" found in Dallas or anywhere else in the United States. Oswald defected from the United States to the Soviet Union in 1959, vowing when he did so that he could no longer live under a capitalist system. He returned to the United States with his Russian wife in 1962 in disappointment with life under Soviet Communism but without giving up his Marxist beliefs. By 1963 he had transferred his political allegiance from the Soviet Union to Castro's Communist regime in Cuba

Garrison said that Shaw used the alias "Clay Bertrand" among New Orleans' gay society.[4][5]

book review: Politics by Assassination: Pacepa Makes a Strong Case
By Jeff R. Nyquist on June 27, 2009
Format: Hardcover
Did the Kremlin order a hit on President John F. Kennedy in 1962? The former chief of Communist Romania's foreign intelligence service thinks so. And he lays out his case in a recently published book with the title Programmed to Kill: Lee Harvey Oswald, the Soviet KGB, and the Kennedy Assassination. According to Ion Mihai Pacepa, "all Soviet-bloc espionage services were identically organized and had an identical modus operandi." Pacepa also explained that, "Soviet espionage operations ... can easily be identified by their particular patterns, of you are familiar with them."
Looking at the case of Lee Harvey Oswald, Pacepa sees a KGB pattern. In the mid-to-late 1950s the Soviet bloc intelligence services were ordered to recruit American servicemen. To this end, loose women were used as "spotters" at bars and nightclubs located near U.S. military bases in Germany and Japan. They were told to watch for U.S. servicemen sympathetic to left-liberal or Marxist ideas. Lee Harvey Oswald was not only an America serviceman stationed in Japan in 1957. He was fascinated by Marxism. As a Marine Corps radar operator Oswald also possessed clues to the flight altitude of the American U-2 spy plane. It was no accident, therefore, that the Soviet Union shot down a U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers on 1 May 1960.
It was noteworthy that Oswald seemed to live beyond his means while in Japan. He dated a hostess from one of the most expensive nightclubs, whose attentions for one night would cost a month's pay. How could he afford such a woman? The answer becomes obvious, says Pacepa, if we realize that Oswald had "Soviet spy" written all over him. When his work in Japan was finished, Oswald didn't want to be in the Marine Corps any longer. What he wanted was to live in the worker's paradise - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. So Lee Harvey Oswald defected to the Soviet Union in October 1959. After helping the Soviets to track and shoot down the U-2 spy plane, Oswald was trained by the KGB as an assassin and returned to the United States.
According to Pacepa, it was standard practice for an agent like Oswald to carry a fake diary (created by disinformation specialists) as part of his "legend." Oswald had such a diary, an obvious fabrication with British spellings and expressions (due to the fact that Russian special services were not trained in American English until 1964). Another standard practice was to pair recruited American agents with wives from Soviet bloc countries, so that the wives could keep watch on them. As it happens, Oswald returned to the United States with a Russian wife.
As for Pacepa's sensational assertion about Khrushchev dispatching Oswald to kill Kennedy, the following points are offered by the former Soviet bloc insider: First, Pacepa's superiors in Romanian intelligence thought that Khrushchev intended to kill JFK. What was Khrushchev's motive? First there was the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba, which earned Kennedy the KGB codename "Pig." Hoping for a weak liberal in the White House, Khrushchev was seriously disappointed. Instead of a willing dupe, Kennedy proved to be a strong anti-Communist. Khrushchev angrily told his colleagues that Kennedy was an "arrogant millionaire" and a "warmongering fanatic manipulated by the CIA."
Bolstered by the CIA's failed Bay of Pigs invasion, Khrushchev decided to force the Americans to give up West Berlin. "If Kennedy wanted war," explained Pacepa, "that was his problem - the Soviet Union would have no choice but to accept his challenge." Kennedy called Khrushchev's bluff, however. "We cannot and will not permit the Communists to drive us out of Berlin, either gradually or by force," said Kennedy. According to Pacepa, Romanian intelligence found that Kennedy had ordered "contingency plans for using nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union" should the crisis escalate.
Khrushchev knew only too well that he had few if any ways to reach the United States with Soviet nuclear weapons." Most Soviet missiles weren't able to fly as far as the United States in those days. What was the Kremlin's solution? Khrushchev decided to secretly deploy more than 50,000 Soviet troops to Cuba along with nuclear-tipped missiles that could threaten Washington and New York - allowing Khrushchev to resume his push against West Berlin. Once again, Kennedy opposed the Soviet leader with a blockade of Cuba. As a result, Khrushchev removed the missiles from Cuba. But Khrushchev would not forgive Kennedy. According to Pacepa, the leader of Communist Romania returned from a trip to Moscow and said, "The lunatic [Khrushchev] is so furious at Kennedy that he's ready to tear him limb from limb with his bare teeth!"
In terms of Khrushchev's character, and his readiness to order a hit on the American president, Pacepa wrote: "Today people remember Khrushchev as a down-to-earth peasant who corrected the evils of Stalin. But he was not. The Khrushchev I knew was a compulsive political chatterbox who had no objective appreciation of facts, and who had gotten a taste for the simple criminal solution because of his close association with Stalin's mass killings."
It is well known that Stalin and Khrushchev both dispatched assassins to the West. In the late 1930s Stalin called for the head of his former colleague, Leon Trotsky. As history records, Ramón Mercader fatally stabbed Trotsky with an ice pick in Mexico. Not only did Stalin reward the assassin's mother with the Order of Lenin; but in 1961 Khrushchev rewarded Mercader with the highest decoration the Kremlin could offer, Hero of the Soviet Union.
As for Khrushchev's assassination exploits, they were exposed in the case of Bogdan Stashinsky who confessed to a West German court that he had assassinated two "enemies of the Soviet Union" on Khrushchev's orders. There is also the case of Nikolai Khokhlov who defected to the West in the midst of an assassination mission. According to Pacepa, Khrushchev wanted to liquidate President Kennedy. There is no doubt he had a motive. In Oswald he found the means.
It is, of course, a fact that many Americans believe the CIA assassinated President Kennedy. After Kennedy's death this idea was propagated on orders from Moscow to divert attention away from the Kremlin. This propaganda effort is described by Pacepa, and has been documented in the work of former KGB archive specialist Vasili Mitrokhin.
Rather than accepting the KGB disinformation line about the Kennedy assassination, American's should read Pacepa's book and judge for themselves.

Trial of Lee Harvey Oswald (1977 movie) portrays woman who spoke with men who said that Oswald was originally to be sent to Cuba to shoot Fidel Castro, but was crazy enough to be re-directed to shoot anybody, even the president.
Going into 1963, however, the anti-Castro Cuban exiles in Miami continued to undertake covert actions against Castro. The CIA claimed the groups got out of its control, “but the rebels were heavily dependent on agency funding and it was never certain whether the groups’ frequent defiance of Kennedy policy was in fact instigated by their spymasters in Langley and Miami.”[47]
One of these groups was the Cuban Student Directorate (DRE), “a particular favourite of the CIA,” which was founded in 1954 “as a Catholic student group militantly opposed to the dictator Batista,” but in 1960 moved to Miami and shifted its operations against Castro, where its operations were planned by the CIA. A man named Lee Harvey Oswald became affiliated with the group in August of 1963. Oswald made contacts with other Cuban exile groups that summer, some of whom found the “Ex-Marine” to be “suspicious” and even reported on him to Bobby Kennedy.[48]

* He builds a serious case for Oswald as a KGB agent, who initially helped the USSR shoot down the U-2 plane in 1952, then defected to the USSR, was trained & prepared to assassinate the detested Kennedy, but slipped out of KGB control
when Moscow changed its mind and cancelled the planned assassination -- and who then went ahead with the murder on his own, and then had to be eliminated (by Jack Ruby) before he could incriminate the USSR.
A complicated report, slow going, but persuasive. Pacepa clearly indicates what information is hard fact and what is specul;ation built on his decadesof experience in & with the KGB. Given his credentials and previously reliable writings, it is the most persuasive account I have seen in the 50 years since Kennedy was murdered.
Proof the russians are still at it and trolling Amazon comments: : Nutshell: the books thesis is that Oswald was trained by the Russians to murder JFK, but then they backed out at the last moment, but crazy kid Oswald did it anyhow.

Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case (Second Edition) [James DiEugenio]
In this book, DiEugenio, who has been investigating the Kennedy assassination for ten years, expands on the major points brought out in JFK , the Oliver Stone movie. Both Stone and DiEugenio agree with Jim Garrison's findings that the assassination was the result of a conspiracy, that members of the U.S. intelligence community were involved, that Kennedy was assassinated to allow U.S. foreign policy to be changed, and that the assassination amounted to a coup d'etat. While DiEugenio discusses Kennedy's rocky relationship with the CIA, he focuses on the Clay Shaw trial and the media's unfair depiction of Garrison as a crank. DiEugenio also points out that in 1975, both the Church Committee and the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded, as had Garrison, that Lee Harvey Oswald was linked with the CIA and Cuban exiles. The book is thoroughly documented with endnotes, appendixes, and a bibliography of over 200 items. While no new revelations are offered, DiEugenio's impeccable research and clearly written analysis makes this a good choice for most libraries. Photos not seen. Other recent books on the Kennedy assassination are Mark North's Act of Treason and Mark Lane's Plausible Denial , both LJ 11/1/91.--Ed.

POSNER in New Orleans
By James A. DiEugenio
Listening to the media accompaniment surrounding the release of Gerald Posner's 600 page volume Case Closed, one was reminded of the trumpet blare which sounded when the Warren Report was released 29 years ago. Reading U.S. News and World Report, a usually staid and reserved publication, one would have expected an investigatory effort worthy of Scotland Yard or the Mossad. What emerges after all the sound and fury is an effort more comparable to the Dallas or Los Angeles Police Departments.
Before getting to the main focus of this essay, one needs to comment on some general matters regarding Mr. Posner and his book. Reportedly, like John McCloy and Allen Dulles, Mr. Posner is a Wall Street lawyer. Based on three interviews with sources who read his previous book on Mengele, Posner whitewashed that notorious Nazi's ties to the Hitler regime before his McCloy-aided escape to South America after World War II. This may help explain Posner's quite questionable use of sources.
About the first half of Case Closed deals exclusively with the life and careers of Lee Oswald. Like the Warren Commission and the five volume FBI report on the assassination, Posner's focus is on Oswald and it is in extreme close-up since it is always easier to portray, a man as a lone nut if you draw him in a virtual vacuum. But to rig the apparatus even further, Posner uses the most specious witnesses imaginable in his single-minded prosecutorial proceeding. Scanning his footnotes for the first ten chapters, a rough approximation would estimate that about 75% of them originate from the Warren Commission volumes. In turn, many of these citings come from the testimony of Marina Oswald who, as lawyer Posner must know, could not have testified at Oswald's trial. Also, Posner never reveals to the reader how Marina was abducted and then stowed away at the Inn of the Six Flags Hotel and how she was virtually quarantined while she was being threatened with deportation. Posner never points out any of the problems and inconsistencies with her Warren Commission testimony, which even some of the Commission members had reservations about, and which a skillful defense lawyer would be able to exploit to great advantage. If that were not enough, Posner quotes liberally from the testimony of both Ruth Paine and George DeMohrenschildt, two people who - to say the least - have questionable motives in this case and both of whom have direct and indirect ties to the CIA. Again, Posner ignores those ties and actually states that DeMohrenschildt had no connection to American intelligence (p. 86), when the CIA admitted those connections over 15 years ago. Posner also uses Oswald's "Historic Diary" against him when everyone, even Edward Epstein, admits that it was not a "diary" at all, but was composed in 2 or 3 installments, probably as part of Oswald's cover as an espionage agent. Finally, Posner quotes liberally from the work of Priscilla Johnson McMillan, the newspaper correspondent who interviewed Oswald in Russia, then helped the Warren Commission find Oswald's tickets to Mexico after the FBI could not. She then locked up Marina Oswald for 13 years with a book contract until Marina and Lee, the mother of all "Oswald-did-it" books appeared in 1977. The working papers of staff lawyer David Slawson reveal that even the Warren Commission suspected Ms. McMillan had ties to the CIA.

They point out that post-communist Russian leader Boris Yeltsin revealed in his memoir, “The Struggle for Russia,” a letter to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union dated Nov. 23, 1963 – the day after Kennedy’s assassination.
The letter, signed by KGB chairman Vladimir Semichastny, recommended publishing in a “progressive paper in one of the Western countries” an article “exposing the attempt by reactionary circles in the USA to remove the responsibility for the murder of Kennedy from the real criminals, [i.e.,] the racists and ultra-right elements guilty of the spread and growth of violence and terror in the United States.”
Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa
Semichastny’s request was approved. Two months later, R. Palme Dutt, the editor of the communist-controlled British journal Labour Monthly, published an article that raised the specter of CIA involvement.
The authors also write that the No. 2 man in the Communist Party USA at the time of the assassination, Morris Childs, played a crucial role in persuading President Lyndon Johnson, the FBI and the CIA that the Soviet Union was not involved in the JFK assassination.
Childs happened to be on his annual trip to Moscow to receive funding and policy instructions when news of the Kennedy assassination broke. Pacepa believes that the KGB knew that Childs and his brother Jack Childs were passing on information to the FBI and decided to use them as “unwitting conduits for disinformation.”
Later, Pacepa and Rychlak note, the House Select Committee on Assassinations excluded the possibility of a Soviet hand in the assassination by simply stating:
In fact the reaction of the Soviet Government as well as the Soviet people seemed to be one of genuine shock and sincere grief. The committee believed, therefore, on the basis of the evidence available to it, that the Soviet Government was not involved in the assassination.

Was Nosenko trying to throw off the scent of Oswald's true mission when he returned from the Soviet Union? Oswald worked with the Marines at Atsugi air base in Japan where he had access to information about the altitude of the U-2 and was quite probably recruited to defect to the Soviet Union. In 1959 he defected.

When Oswald returned from the Soviet Union in June 1962, joined by a Russian wife, he moved to Dallas, and lectured his more liberal acquaintances on the need for violent action rather than mere words. General Edwin A. Walker, an extreme conservative who had been active in Dallas organizing anti-Castro guerrillas, became, in the spring of 1963, a particular focus of Oswald's attention. He repeatedly suggested to a German geologist, Volkmar Schmidt, and other friends, that General Walker should be treated like a "murderer at large." In this context, he stalked Walker's movements, photographing his residence from several angles; had his wife photograph him, dressed entirely in black, with his revolver strapped on a holster on his hip, his sniper's rifle in his right hand, and two newspapers -- The Worker and The Militant -- in his left hand; and made three copies of the photograph, one of which he inscribed, dated "5--IV--63" and sent to a Dallas acquaintance, George de Mohrenschildt. Oswald then went to Walker's house and fired a shot at him that missed his head by inches, demonstrating that he had the capacity as well as the willingness to kill "any American."

an itinerant oil engineer who fed intelligence to the CIA

New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison prosecuted Clay Shaw on the charge that Shaw and a group of right-wing activists, including David Ferrie and Guy Banister, were involved in a conspiracy with elements of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the John F. Kennedy assassination. Garrison arrested Shaw on March 1, 1967.[3] Garrison believed that Clay Shaw was the man named as "Clay Bertrand" in the Warren Commission Report. Garrison said that Shaw used the alias "Clay Bertrand" among New Orleans' gay society.[4][5]

In Oswald's Tale: An American Mystery Norman Mailer interviewed that Minsk KGB officer, giving him the pseudonym of "Igor Ivanovich Guzmin." I believe that his actual name isGOLUBTSOV. According to Mailer, he was born in 1922 and was assigned by Moscow Central to Minsk KGB counterintelligence in 1946. He retired in 1977 as head of Belorussian Republic counterintelligence. His primary assignment from 1946 to 1953 was to hunt down former collaborators with the Nazi occupation forces, although that probably included and extended to anybody Stalin wanted purged in the postwar era. Golubtsov also would be concerned with capturing agents infiltrated by parachute or land into the Minsk area by US and British intelligence services: four such US agents were captured in 1951 alone. (These would have been former Soviet citizens working for US intelligence.) Oswald was identified as a potential threat to the USSR and not as a possible source for intelligence. There were express orders that Oswald was not to be formally debriefed. The Oswald case was only one of many for which Golobutsov was responsible in Minsk According to Golubtsov, the KGB was considering the following factors and scenarios in their analysis of Oswald's threat potential:

Lt. Gen. Mihai Pacepa, in his book “Disinformation”, presents evidence that Oswald was recruited by the KGB to kill Kennedy when he was a U.S. Marine stationed at the Atsugi Air Station in Japan, the home of the U-2 spy plane.
After defecting to the Soviet Union, Oswald returned to the U.S. three years later “programmed” by the Kremlin to assassinate Kennedy, Pacepa believes. Moscow later tried to stop the plot and “turn Oswald off,” but he went ahead with the plan.

the former Romanian intelligence chief documents that Oswald was recruited by the KGB when he was a U.S. Marine stationed in Japan and that, after defecting to the Soviet Union, he came back to America three years later for the express purpose of killing Kennedy. though the Soviets, for their own reasons, subsequently tried “to turn Oswald off,” Oswald went ahead with the plan and was already “programmed” by the communists to kill Kennedy. Kenneth J. Dillon, a former Foreign Service officer and intelligence analyst, writes that “Given Oswald’s aggressive mentality [he had tried to kill right-wing General Edwin A. Walker] and track record (well known to the KGB), it would have required very little for the KGB to insert into his mind the suggestion that he should assassinate Kennedy.Indeed, virulent communist hate propaganda during Oswald’s years in the Soviet Union might have instilled in his impressionable brain the need to take action, as the occasion presented itself, against those like the American president who thwarted the progress of communism.”

Who is Jim DiEugenio?
by GUS RUSSO / Spring, 1999
[Editor’s note: The following is Gus Russo’s response to Jim DiEugenio’s article, “Who is Gus Russo?”, originally posted on the Internet in 1999.]
Since the 1993 airing of the PBS Frontline episode, Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?, an astounding amount of half-truths and misinformation has made the rounds concerning yours truly. Until now, I had no desire to respond to these “critics,” since the old maxim “consider the source” more than clarified this flow of lunacy to anyone who had evolved beyond the homo erectus stage. However, one recent diatribe is so alarming it must be dealt with post haste.
I refer of course to an article that appeared in the January-February 1999 issue of an anti-government rag with a richly-deserved microscopic circulation. That piece of claptrap is entitled Probe, and purports to be the mouthpiece of a group who call themselves the Committee to Investigate the Kennedy Assassination (CTKA). (Many believe the title Probe is actually a thinly-veiled reference to a device that is employed by a cult with a fondness for proctological exams. I myself would never believe such a thing. But who knows?)
The guru of the “Probers” is an unrepentant Jim Garrison apologist who goes by the name Jim DiEugenio, and in this recent issue he authored an article (“Who is Gus Russo?”) that is more error-ridden than the 1965 New York Mets. What makes it dangerous, however, is the possibility that someone is using Jim's name in an elaborate smear campaign - a foreign intelligence apparatus perhaps (?). The proof is rooted not only in the unique history of Jim DiEugenio, but in a tell-tale oversight in the article, missed by the smear perpetrators. Even the best make mistakes.

Destiny Betrayed begins in the Cold War shadow wars, a mix of skullduggery and dirty deeds where even the President is kept in the dark in regards to what is going on. As DiEugenio shows, CIA Director Allen Dulles was attempting to dupe Kennedy into foreign policy and military actions he was not wanting to be a part of. Dulles took the Central Intelligence Agency far from its original intent of intelligence gathering to a machiavellian, duplicitous outfit overthrowing democratically elected governments under the guise of combating communism, replacing them with controllable right-wing dictatorships, and for the most part, setting the stage for the profiteering of American corporations. So manipulating Presidents for CIA objectives has become the modus operandi of the Agency that lasts to this day. Meanwhile, the American public sleeps through these affairs being distracted with the communistic threat, the baby boom, pop culture, sports and so on. The National Security State descends and much of American history becomes a secret locked away in warehouses.
Kennedy was not a believer in the Domino Theory. The Bay of Pigs fiasco, well detailed in Destiny Betrayed, is a CIA run military op destined to fail so American troops could be called in it finish the job. Kennedy found out none of this till he ordered an inquiry into what happened and the ever duplicitous Allen Dulles and other top CIA officials lost their jobs.

1963: Fifty years ago, Lee Harvey Oswald does something in Dallas, the president’s head explodes, and soon Oswald is dead too. According to polls, more than half the nation still believes that if Oswald was involved at all in the shooting (not just, as he claimed, “a patsy”) he was part of a conspiracy involving two shooters, even “two Oswalds” or an “Oswald impersonator” or two. But the true locus of mystery and generator of conspiratorial doubt is Oswald’s mind, that lonely labyrinth in which even he may have been lost. Whose side was he really on, was he a double agent, was he a player on his own stage, or was he being played? By whom?
The Oswald-related book, Castro’s Secrets, is by Brian Latell, a former top-level CIA agent charged with the debriefing of a high-ranking defector from Fidel Castro’s highly secretive intelligence agency, the DGI. The defector who came in from the cold in Vienna in 1987, a guy named Florentino Aspillaga, offered some remarkable inside DGI information about Oswald, the DGI, and Fidel that, if true, argues for a paradigm shift in Kennedy assassination theories. He also discloses substantiating material from a previous defector—information that was new to me.
there he is again, Angleton, who, turns out, plays a crucial role in Brian Latell’s new Castro/Oswald book as well. Because while Castro’s Secrets centers on Latell’s firsthand account of debriefing Aspillaga, the 1987 DGI defector (whom he interviewed in depth), Lattel also has dug up files on a previous defector who was inside the Castro’s DGI at the time of the Kennedy assassination and defected in early 1964, while the Warren Report—which concluded that Oswald acted alone—was being written. According to Latell, the 1964 defector claimed the DGI had significant contacts with Oswald, but that Angleton mysteriously suppressed the defector’s report on what Castro might have known, denying the Warren Commission any knowledge of it.

Both of the previously undisclosed DGI defector reports center on a highly contentious episode two months before the assassination of JFK, when Oswald visited the Cuban Embassy in Mexico City and demanded a visa to Cuba—supposedly to fight for the Cuban Revolution then under threat from invasion and assassination plots orchestrated by JFK and his brother Bobby. Or was it an Oswald impersonator who visited the Cuban Embassy? ...
... A mole! As a Marine, Oswald just happened to be stationed at a U-2 base in Japan; he subsequently defected to the Soviet Union, declaring himself a true believer in Communism. The defection has long been a source of much speculation: Had he been “planted” there by our side? The way Philby was suspected of being a plant?... The KGB had its doubts about Oswald, or so it appears: They settled him in out-of-the-way Minsk, where he married a young [KGB princess] Russian named Marina. They bugged his apartment for years.... Then he decided to re-defect to the U.S. (Was he going back because he was disillusioned by Communism, or because the KGB sent him on a mission?) He settled in Dallas, but in the summer of ’63 moved on his own to New Orleans, where he advertised himself as a pro-Castro activist and got into fights with anti-Castro Cubans. (Was he making himself conspicuous as a Communist in order to pin the forthcoming crime on Castro or the Russians?)
It was Oswald’s trip that fall to Mexico City that is the hot center of Lee Harvey conspiracy theory. And Latell now comes forward with two defectors from the DGI to say Oswald had extensive contacts with Fidel’s intel men in Mexico City, even cites a report Oswald vowed to kill Kennedy, and that Fidel knew of those contacts.
In other words Fidel may have had—Latell is not definitive but strongly suggestive of it—foreknowledge of Oswald’s motives, if not complicity in the Dallas hit. Latell’s attention-getting revelation: According to DGI defector Aspillaga, on the morning of Nov. 22, 1963, the DGI was ordered to shift radio surveillance from South Florida, where the Cuba exiles were habitually scheming, to Texas, where JFK was touring in an open car. You do the math. ... Though Fidel denied it, repeatedly, Aspillaga insists Castro was lying at the very least about his knowledge of Oswald activity at the Cuban Embassy, and his pro-Castro allegiance. And in the midst of all this we once again find James Angleton

Why did Angleton withhold....would discover an explosively dangerous truth, a truth that could lead to a third world war....might have been provoked to invade Cuba, leading—Latell speculates—to a clash with the Russian troops still stationed there, leading to ... who knows. If it were true, nobody, including apparently Angleton, wanted it known. The price of revenge might be too high.

The Soviets tried to mask their connection to Oswald by publishing through a KGB front company, Marzani and Munsell, the book, Oswald, Assassin or Fall Guy. The book was dedicated to Mark Lane, whose book, Rush to Judgment, blamed right-wingers for the Kennedy assassination.

This KGB disinformation campaign was called “Dragon Operation,” an effort to shift blame for Kennedy’s murder away from the communists.
The KGB’s Mitrokhin archive shows indirect Soviet support for Lane, considered “the most talented of the first wave of conspiracy theorists researching the Kennedy assassination.” Soviet funds were funneled to him through an associate, the book says.
I.F. Stone, the so-called maverick left-wing journalist later exposed as a Soviet agent, also joined the effort to blame the Right.
“For 15 years of my life at the top of the Soviet bloc intelligence community, I was involved in a world-wide disinformation effort aimed at diverting attention away from the KGB’s involvement with Lee Harvey Oswald. The Kennedy assassination conspiracy was born—and it never died,” says Ion Mihai Pacepa, the highest ranking intelligence official ever to defect from the Soviet bloc. Pacepa wrote the book, Programmed to Kill: Lee Harvey Oswald, the Soviet KGB, and the Kennedy Assassination.

Quantum Leap
.George de Mohrenschildt
an itinerant oil engineer who fed intelligence to the CIA

In the event of war I would kill any American who put a uniform on in defense of the American Government" -- and then ominously added for emphasis, "Any American."
KGB had to evaluate if Oswald was an American spy, as the west had parachuted some former Russians as spy into the Soviet Union.
http://www.russianbooks.org/oswald/minsk2.htm
- Oswald's former service in the Marines was alarming, as the KGB perceived the US military as frequent recruiting ground for US intelligence agents;
- Oswald's claim of being a Marxist, was suspicious in view of his apparently poor proficiency in Maxist-Leninist theories;
- Oswald, it was feared, perhaps spoke better Russian than he let on;
- Oswald was on an intelligence assignment to check out how the Soviet authorities handle US defectors;
- Oswald was a genuine immigrant to the USSR;
- Oswald was mentally unbalanced.
Golubtsov understood his mission as ensuring that Lee Oswald was not a threat to the USSR, without Oswald having a bad time; just in case he really was a genuine immigrant to the USSR and a potentially valuable propaganda scoop.

(transcript of Walter Cronkite interviewing Oswald's mother:)
Cronkite: Mrs. Oswald, how old was Lee when he went in the Marine Corp?
Oswald: Lee was exactly seventeen years old when he went in the Marine Corp. He enlisted on his birthday.
Cronkite: Mrs. Oswald, why do you think your son went to Russia?
Oswald: I think my son was sent to Russia. You see, Lee knew Russian fluently; read and write. He filed an application for Albert Schweitzer school and on the application, I have an original application; it stated that "I speak and write Russian".
Cronkite: Where did he learn this?
Oswald: This is what I was going to tell you. He learned this while in the Marines because Lee was in the Marines and only out three days when he went to Russia. So Lee had to learn this while he was in the Marines.
Cronkite: What did you think about your son marrying a Russian girl?
Oswald: Well, to me, a Russian girl, any foreign girl, a Negro, or just any human being, live and breathe just like I do. And so it made no difference to me that he married a Russian girl. I believe that Lee was told to marry the Russian girl. He probably loved her and was going with because he knew her six weeks when he married her. But I think he had orders from the State Dept. to marry the Russian girl.
Cronkite: Mrs. Oswald, do you feel that your son was an agent of the CIA?
Oswald: Yes, it's not that I feel that he was an agent of the CIA because I have so much correspondence with the State Dept. plus the letters that Lee wrote to me from Russia that indicate that he was an agent of our government. Definitely.
Cronkite: Did he ever intimate to you in any way that he was an agent of the government?
Oswald: No, and there again this is Lee's disposition. He wouldn't tell a mother that he was working for the government. Possibly he might think that I'd might give the secret away. I'm under the impression when you are a CIA or any undercover agent, then naturally, you're a little secretive about it. He wouldn't tell me that.

Mark Lane received over $90,000 from the KGB in 1964 to lecture about the JFK assassination and write Rush To Judgment. That's several 100K dollars in today's money. JFK was killed by Castro and Moscow and Lane's job was to cover up the facts. We have the proof in the KGB files. Look it up. Lane is a Jonestown survivor. He was Jim Jones lawyer. His job in Jonestown was to set up Jones and his followers for assassination by the CIA. The mass suicides and the tapes were faked. Mark Lane and the KGB - Google Groups
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/alt.conspiracy.jfk/.../DPZh8bzyOy4J
- When the Soviet regime ended, the KGB archivist Vasili Mitrokhin defected to
the British with documentation showing that Mark Lane received money from
the KGB through an intermediary and advice from the KGB writer Genrikh
Borovik and other Soviet journalists the KGB trusted.
Vasili Mitrokhin and the Cambridge historian Christopher Andrew wrote about
Mark Lane in a book called The Sword and Shield, and you can read what they
wrote on pages 227-228. The passage from 225-230 details the conspiracy
theories of the KGB and Mark Lane about the Kennedy murder.
According to Mitrokhin and Andrew, the KGB believed that President Kennedy
had been killed by right-wingers:
The choice of Oswald as Kennedy's assassin, the KGB believed, was intended
to divert public attention from the racist oil magnates and make the
assassination appear to be a Communist plot (225).
Mitrokhin and Andrew also detail Mark Lane's conspiracy theory:
Together with student assistants and other volunteers, Lane founded the
Citizens' Committee of Inquiry in a small office on lower Fifth Avenue and
rented a small theater at which, each evening for several months, he gave
what became known as "The Speech," updating the development of his
conspiracy theory. "This alternative method of dissent was required," writes
Lane, "because not a single network radio or television program permitted
the broadcast of a word of divergence from the official view." Though it
dared not take the risk of contacting Lane directly, the New York residency
sent him 1,500 dollars to help finance his research through the intermediary
of a close friend whom Lane's KGB file identifies only as a trusted contact.
While Lane was not told the source of the money, the residency suspected
that he might have guessed where it came from; it was also concerned that
the secret subsidy might be discovered by the FBI.
The same intermediary provided 500 dollars to pay for a trip by Lane to
Europe in 1964. While there, Lane asked to visit Moscow in order to discuss
some of the material he had found. The Centre regretfully concluded that
inviting him to Russia would reveal its hand in too blatant a way and his
proposed trip was "tactfully postponed." Trusted contacts were, however,
selected from among Soviet journalists to encourage him in his research.
Among them was the KGB agent Genrikh Borovik, who later maintained regular
contact with Lane. Lane's Rush to Judgment, published in 1966, alleged
complicity at the highest levels of government in the Kennedy assassination.
It was top of that year's hardback bestseller best and went on to become the
best-selling paperback of 1967, as well as enjoying what Lane modestly
describes as enormous success around the world" and causing "a dramatic
change in public perception" of the assassination.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Lane's success was less enormous. The
most popular books on the assassination were now those that exposed some of
the excesses of the conspiracy theorists." CPUSA leaders who visited Moscow
in 1971, though describing Rush to Judgment as "advantageous to the
Communists," claimed that Lane's main motive was his own self-aggrandizement
(pp. 227-228).
On page 233, The Sword and Shield provides the KGB's account of its efforts
to blame the Jonestown tragedy on the CIA, although remarkably the book
fails to mention that Mark Lane was the lawyer for Jonestown. In 1978, a publication called the Covert Action Information Bulletin was
founded "on the initiative of the KGB." The CIA defector Philip Agee and a
group of supporters were the publishers (Sword and Shield. pp. 232-233).Mitrokhin and Andrew explain:The Centre [KGB] assembled a task force of personnel from Service A and
Directorate K...to keep the Covert Action Information Bulletin supplied with
material designed to compromise the CIA...[The] task force, however, became
increasingly concerned about the difficulty of finding enough secret
material for the Bulletin, and recommended that it look harder for more
open-source material...which could be blamed on the CIA---among them the
Jonestown massacre in Guyana, when 900 members of the American religious
cult the "People's Temple" had been persuaded to commit mass suicide or had
been murdered (233).Much of the information Mitrokhin brought out from the KGB files is still
classified, so I don't know if this book gives a full account of Mark Lane's
activities according to the KGB.In his article "Documenting the KGB," Stephen Stromberg explains:According to the FBI, Mitrokhin’s documents are 'the most complete and
extensive intelligence ever received from any source.' Perhaps the most
significant prize for the Western intelligence community are the documents
that contain the real names and identities of thousands of foreign agents
the KGB recruited and kept under deep cover abroad—a rosetta stone for the
spy world...Many of the documents remain classified [Full text].
Mark Lane also published a book called Coversations with Americans that told
half-truths and totally fabricated stories about American war crimes in
Vietnam.

As part of this effort to vindicate the CIA, hinging on the story of the purported KGB forgery, Andrew spends a great deal of energy spinning a literary web around the charge that pioneer JFK assassination investigator Mark Lane was either a witting or unwitting tool of the KGB in his writing of Rush to Judgment, Lane’s ground-breaking critique of the Warren Commission Report on the assassination of President Kennedy.
Andrew connects Lane to the theory that "the CIA killed JFK" but fails to advise his readers that never once in Rush to Judgment did Lane ever allege that the CIA was involved in the president’s assassination.
And Lane’s book never once, in any way, shape or form, referred to the apparently forged "Dear Mr. Hunt" letter so widely heralded in the press coverage of Andrew’s book..
While Lane’s thesis about CIA involvement was outlined in his much later-written 1993 book, Plausible Denial, based in part on the information that came out during Lane’s defense in 1985 of The Spotlight newspaper against a libel suit filed by E. Howard Hunt, the "Dear Mr. Hunt" letter played no part in the scenario outlined in Plausible Denial either.
In addition, in Plausible Denial, Lane develops solid evidence demonstrating that the CIA itself fabricated a scenario linking Oswald to a KGB officer in Mexico.
.Mel Aynton

conspiracy writers have also alleged Lee Harvey Oswald had been manipulated by mind-control experts to carry out the assassination of JFK. Jerry Leonard, Lincoln Lawrence and Kenn Thomas believe that Oswald’s bizarre behaviour was remarkably consistent with that of an unwitting ‘hypno-programmed spy’. They also believe that Oswald’s alleged links to the CIA and the further allegation that George de Mohrenschildt was Oswald’s ‘handler’ or ‘controller’ were proof enough that Oswald had been brainwashed to kill President Kennedy. Dick Russell also alleged Oswald had been a hypnotized assassin in his book, The Man Who Knew Too Much, an account of Russell's investigation into the subject of Richard Case Nagell. Nagell stated that during the summer of 1963 he had discovered that Oswald was ‘undergoing hypnotherapy’ from JFK conspirator David Ferrie. The story however, had originated with a notorious fabricator, Jack Martin, who later admitted the story was false. (2)
The only plausible JFK ‘Manchurian candidate-type’ theory comes from Ion Mahai Pacepa. Pacepa was head of Romania's secret security agency before defecting to the U.S. in 1978. In his book Pacepa maintains that Khrushchev plotted the assassination, only to have a change of heart, but Soviet agents were unable to deprogram Oswald. Pacepa also claims that Carousel Club owner Jack Ruby was working as an intelligence agent for the Cuban DGI. However, there are fundamental flaws to Pacepa’s story. KGB officers who had an interest in Oswald when he was in the Soviet Union have testified that the KGB found him to be unstable and untrustworthy. It is therefore extremely unlikely the Soviets would have wanted to employ someone of Oswald’s calibre.
Additionally, Pacepa is on shaky ground when he alleges that Ruby acted at the behest of the Cuban regime, and was later poisoned in order to silence him. That allegation, of course, would have to take into account the implausible notion that Ruby’s doctor was part of the conspiracy. Furthermore, Ruby died from a pulmonary embolism and cancer of the lungs and brain more than three years after he murdered Oswald - why would an apparently all-powerful intelligence agency wait that long ? If Ruby had wanted to spill the beans he had plenty of opportunity. As it turned out the only conspiracy Ruby complained about was a conspiracy to ‘kill the Jews’, a product of his mental illness.
. . . there were tantalizing hints in the RFK assassination case that would lead conspiracists to build a case (albeit, a flimsy one) for CIA involvement in creating a robotic patsy. . . |
Pacepa offers no convincing Soviet motive for the assassination. Furthermore, as Vincent Bugliosi said in his examination of the allegations that the Soviet Union planned and carried out the assassination, “Russia had absolutely nothing to gain but much to lose in killing Kennedy”. And, according to the State Department and counterintelligence officers who debriefed Pacepa, changes to his defection story cast doubt on his veracity. (3)
There is nothing in Oswald’s background that could remotely infer he was hypnotically controlled by the CIA despite the speculative accounts by some JFK assassination writers. But there were tantalizing hints in the RFK assassination case that would lead conspiracists to build a case (albeit, a flimsy one) for CIA involvement in creating a robotic patsy, including Sirhan’s strange behaviour before and after he was arrested, the presence of a mysterious girl in a polka dot dress and the purported presence of CIA agents at the Ambassador Hotel the night Robert Kennedy was assassinated.

"There seems to be a lot of misperception of what Final Judgment does and does not say about the JFK assassination. The book does not say that "the Jews killed JFK." That's horse manure." - Mark Braver, Chicago, Illinois
"As an Israeli/American peace activist I welcome this book . This book is especially topical today as the search for peace in the Middle East continues. This is the only way in which the worst excesses of Zionism can be curbed." -- David L. Rubinstein from Tel Aviv See Reviews.

"After the assassination, an informer for the Secret Service and the FBI who had infiltrated a Cuban exile group and was in the process of selling them machine guns, reported that on November 21, 1963 he was told, 'We now have plenty of money-our new backers are the Jews-as soon as they take care of JFK.' This man had furnished reliable information in the past."
Andrew’s book claimed that KGB data purloined by Mitrokhin revealed that a letter—supposedly written prior to the assassination by JFK’s accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, and addressed to a "Mr. Hunt" (presumably the CIA’s E. Howard Hunt)—was actually a KGB forgery. According to Andrew, the letter was fabricated in the mid-1970s after Hunt’s name came to widespread public attention over his involvement in the Watergate scandal and then sent out to independent researchers who were looking into the JFK assassination.

From the acclaimed author of JFK and Vietnam comes a book thatuncovers the government's role in the Kennedy assassination moreclearly than any previous inquiry. What was the extent of the CIA'sinvolvement with Lee Harvey Oswald? Why was Oswald's file tampered withbefore the assassination of John F. Kennedy? And why did significantdocuments from that file mysteriously disappear? Oswald and the CIAanswers these questions, not with theories, but with information fromthe primary sources themselves—ex-agents, officials, and secretrecords. To look at the Oswald file is to look at the most sensitiveCIA operation of the Cold War. The story is as alarming as it istragic; the lies and manipulations it reveals led directly to Kennedy'smurder. Oswald and the CIA is a gripping journey to the darkest corners of the CIA.

Lt.

McCone to Rowley: Oswald Was One of Our Boysby Walt Brown
A document, clearly the smoking gun that Oswald was in the employee of the CIA, came to light and was widely circulated on the Internet. The question, however, remains: is it genuine? The entire document will be typed herein, as I cannot cut and paste it and still make it readable. It is a "United States Government" Memorandum dated March 3, 1964 (stamped "Confidential" and is from "Mr. John McCone Director, Central Intelligence Agency," to "Mr. James J. Rowley, Chief, U.S. Secret Service."
Subject: Central Intelligence Report on the assassination of John Kennedy.
In response to the request made by your office on 24 February 1964 re: Lee Oswald's activities and assignments on behalf of this agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation, there follows a narrative summary of the internal subversive activities of the Oswald subject.
I recommend that unless the Commission makes a specific request for specific information contained herein, that this information not be volunteered. This agency has reason to assume that some junior Commission staff members may be potential sources of leaks to the news media or to other agencies; due to the highly sensitive nature of the enclosed material, it would certainly be in the national interest to withhold it at this time -- unless there is, of course, a specific request made.
It is my understanding that Mr. Hoover has certain sensitive information within his agency, which has be transferred to his own personal files for safekeeping; he concurs that no material should be voluntarily given to the Commission which might affect the status of field operatives or their safety. He is particularly concerned about the De Bruey memorandum, which Central Intelligence has obtained and which, I understand, you have obtained. It is imperative that this information, at least for the time, remain under wraps.
Oswald subject was trained by this agency, under cover of the Office of Naval Intelligence, for Soviet assignments. During preliminary training, in 1957, subject was active in aerial reconnaissance of mainland China and maintained a security clearance up to the "confidential" level. His military records during this period are open to your agency and I have directed they be forwarded to the Commission.
Subject received additional indoctrination at our own Camp Peary site from September 8 to October 17, 1958, and participated in a few relatively minor assignments until arrangements were made for his entry into the Soviet Union in September 1959. While in the Soviet Union, he was on special assignment in the area of Minsk. It would not be advantageous at this time to divulge the specifics of that assignment; however, if you wish this information, it can be made available for your personal inspection within the confines of our own offices, or I can send it by courier on the condition that it not leave the custody of the courier. I am concerned that if this information were in any way disclosed to the wrong persons, it would lead the media to erroneously claim this agency, and perhaps others, were directly involved in the Dallas action. While the persons involved were in the employ of this agency, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, it is virtually impossible for this or any agency to maintain full, 24-hours-a-day responsibility over its operatives.
At the time of the Dallas action, the Oswald subject was only (xxxx xx) in our employ; after the Soviet assignment, we found him to be unreliable and emotionally unstable. He was of little use to us after his marriage and De Bruey, from what I understand, concurred in this. He was provided with a few unimportant infiltration assignments and proved of little or no value. It is possible that Oswald, given his instability, might have been involved in some operation involving Hoffa, as noted in SAIC Bertram's report to your agency dated 1/3/64. Mr. Hoover advises that his agency is trying to determine whether Hoffa might have been involved laterally or vertically with the Dallas assassination I have advised that I would be interested in seeing the results of that investigation.
Mr. Hoover advises that the facts given in SAIC Bertran's [ed. note: "Bertram" in first usage, Bertran" here] 1/3/64 report are basically correct. His agency has advised Deputy Sweatt against any further unauthorized statements to the news media which might adversely affect the investigation. Mr. Hoover advises he has no knowledge of how Deputy Sweatt obtained his information, as there is no record of the agency distributing any such information to Sweatt or any other member of Dallas Sheriff's office. It is regrettable that this information has come to the attention of the news media, but I am sure Mr. Hoover will be able to clarify the situation.
Speculation within this agency -- and this is only speculation at this point -- is that Oswald subject became unstable following surgery April 1, 1961, in the Minsk Hospital. He may have been chemically or electronically "controlled"... a sleeper agent. Subject spent eleven days hospitalized for a "minor ailment" which should have required no more than three days hospitalization at the most. Six days after his release, he met Marina Prusakova. This agency is particularly interested in her intelligence background and I have requested a report on same from our Soviet Embassy contact.
After his return to the U.S., Oswald worked in New Orleans through the Anti-Communist League of the Caribbean and Friends of Democratic Cuba; his case officer was SAIC Guy Bannister from the Chicago F131 office. He was transferred from his assignments there after he was arrested and fined stemming from an incident of his distribution of pamphlets for the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. While our files here show no flirther assignments or contact, I am requesting an (xx) check on the subject from our New Orleans and Ft. Worth offices.
Please direct any further communication on this matter to my personal attention so that your requests may be expedited, or feel free to call me anytime. My office is always available to you.

This is one of the so called "Zipper" documents that was first revealed by Gregory Douglas (Regicide - the Killing of a President), and along with his list of CIA assets subsequently exposed as a mailing list of David A. Phillips' Association of Retired Intelligence Officers, which Douglas failed to acknowledge.
The so-called McCone document is most certainly false since Oswald at the time he was said to have been at Camp Perry was in USSR, and no one believes that such a document would intentionally created to implicate those that are mentioned.
I don't think anybody has found specifics, but an obvious guess would be that a person who profoundly believes that Oswald had a background in intelligence and that it was covered up might take it upon themselves to "sweeten" the evidence and provide a "smoking gun." In their eyes, this would advance research by establishing something that they already know is true.
(I feel the same about a figure in assassination research who profoundly believes certain things, but feels it necessary to sweeten the evidence with ersatz personal recollections.) The problem with all this is that it muddies the waters of evidence, of what we know and can prove, of what we don't know and can't prove. Fortunately, the McCone-Rowley memo is filled with screaming red flags, and sensible researchers urged caution from the beginning.
An alternate scenario is that it was crudely faked with the expectation that it would be quickly exposed, in an effort to discredit serious researchers. I think this is unlikely.

When I looked at it I knew instantly that it was a fake. How? It is not written in the proper format using the proper CIA style. One tip off is the marking "CO-2-34,030." That is actually from a Secret Service report. How would I know? Because I had obtained and used on my Web site some of the pages from that SS report, so the notation jumped out as a fabrication. What someone did was take a page from the SS report, maybe even downloaded it from my Web page, removed the original text and wrote their own. Also the wording is not how the CIA would word a document of that type at that time. They would not refer to Hoover by name or agencies by common names. Instead you would see code words like ODACID. You need to look at hundreds of thousands of genuine CIA documents as I have to develop a mental database of what genuine CIA documents look like. I have no doubt that the hoaxer really thought that something like that was said. I don't think the intent was like the other hoaxes to discredit all JFK assassination research. I think someone just assumed that he knew enough to create a realistic fake to incriminate the CIA.

After defecting to the Soviet Union, Oswald returned to the U.S. three years later “programmed” by the Kremlin to assassinate Kennedy, Pacepa believes. Moscow later tried to stop the plot and “turn Oswald off,” but he went ahead with the plan.

write that the “jewel in the crown of Soviet disinformation” connected with Oswald’s story is the recently published revelation about the U-2 spy plane flown by Francis Gary Powers over the Soviet Union.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev examines items retrieved from the downed U-2 spy plane
It was not shot down by Soviet rockets, as the Russians have always claimed, but was brought down by a Sukhoi Su-9 plane that had been specially modified to achieve higher altitudes.
They say it appears that Oswald provided the KGB with the highly secret flight altitude of the U-2 plane, enabling the Soviets to prepare the specially modified plane and have it ready to intercept the U.S. spy plane.
The unarmed Su-9 caught the U-2 in its slipstream, causing it to flip over and break its wings.
The measure allowed Powers to be captured alive and paraded by Kruschev as a propaganda prize.

.Yuri Ivanovich Nosenko
.A KGB spy who switched allegiances at the height of the Cold War and was considered by the CIA as its "most valuable and economical defector" has died. Yuri Ivanovich Nosenko defected in Switzerland in 1964. Confined to a safe house in Clinton, Md., the former Soviet spy was interrogated for about four months in 1965 until transferred to a specially constructed jail because he was suspected of being a double agent, according to decades-old CIA documents released last year. He was held until October 1967, then resettled under an assumed identity. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/ex-kgb-spy-cia-valuable-defector-dies-article-1.318625#ixzz2kojaf0ER
