May 4, 2013 Bride Limousine Fire A fire broke out on a stretched town car limousine on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge because of a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension system. The driver helped the four survivors escape through the partition, but the new bride 31-year-old bride Neriza Fojas was killed with four other passengers. The rear doors had the child lock engaged. Families of the victims are filing suit against 6 companies, including Ford Motors, and the limo operator Limo Stop.

  1. Mysterious Bride Limousine Fire Caused By Air Spring Failure

May 4, 2013 A fire broke out on a stretched town car limousine on  the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge on May 4 because of a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension system.
the driver helped the four survivors escape through the partition. one of the rear doors had the child lock engaged, and the other side of the limo was too burned for them to tell.

But why did the air springs fail?

blaze broke out on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge on May 4 because of a catastrophic failure of the rear suspension system, CHP Capt. Mike Maskarich said. The air suspension failure allowed the spinning driveshaft to contact the floor pan, causing friction that ignited carpets and set the vehicle on fire, authorities said.

“The rear of the limo is fully engulfed, and the doors are locked,” the rescuer said.

Investigators said one of the rear doors had the child lock engaged, and the other side of the limo was too burned for them to tell.

the partition was so small my hips got stuck between the partition and the small ledge. I was hanging out headfirst,” she said.

the driver was “standing out there on his phone,” after stopping the limo.
“He did not open the doors,” Guardiano said. “I went out through the partition and called 911 from outside.”

Brown said he helped the four survivors escape through the partition. One of the women ran around to a rear passenger door but by then the vehicle was engulfed in flam

the suspension and axle travel stops for the differential failed, allowing the spinning driveshaft to rub directly underneath the floor panel. “The heat and possibly sparks, generated from the friction ... ignited the materials covering the floorboard,” the report said.

materials were the carpet in the backseat.
The report doesn’t pinpoint why the air suspension failed, but it said those failures “occur with some frequency, due to the normal wear and aging of the various components.

From 2002 through 2011, 31 limousine passengers or drivers died in 21 crashes, according to data kept by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Only three of those deaths were related to a fire, all in 2003.
[can't find any other instance of a fire caused by drive-shaft rubbing, which is a common problem without the fire]

There were also reports that the back of the limousine was low to the ground while transporting the nine women — one more than the limo is permitted to carry — across the bridge on May 4.

    Why Do Air Suspensions Fail?

    Leaking Air Ride Strut
The primary reason is the air bags that are part of the air spring are made out of rubber and they dry rot over a period of 5 to 7 years. They develop cracks and start to leak. Extreme heat and extreme cold accelerate the rate of decay, so if you live in the extreme north or the extreme south, your air suspension system will fail faster. There is no way to repair the air bag once it starts to leak, it has to be replaced.

After the systems starts leaking, the compressor is usually next to go. Most of the time, the compressor has actually failed before the owner notices there is a problem. The failure of the compressor triggers the check suspension light, but it is already too late. The extent of the repairs required at this point is very expensive.

Ignoring The Problem Is Not The Solution

Failure to repair your air suspension system can also lead to some major safety issues, such as an air spring blowing out while doing 75MPH could send the car into a spin. Really, really not good.
A faulty air suspension can cause loss of work, car rental, towing bills, excessive repair costs (especially by big car dealerships), and in general can be very frustrating and inconvenient to say the least. Bottom line: it can cost you big bucks. [But burst into flames????]
