October 14, 2013 Dry Ice Bomb Shuts Down LAX Terminal At Los Angeles International Aiport, terminal 2 was closed after a bomb constructed from dry ice and a 20 oz plastic bottle exploded in an employee-restricted restroom at about 7 p.m, delaying about four flights until 8:45 p.m. after the LAPD bomb squad investigated and cleared the scene. The next day another bomb went off in a restricted employee bathroom. Airport police and a bomb squad cleared the bomb and two other unexploded bottles around 9:45 p.m. Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Criminal Conspiracy Section were investigating how the bombs were placed in security areas, and the federal FBI is assisting, but investigators don't believe the incident is linked to terrorism.  On October 15,  28-year-old Dicarlo Bennett was arrested. who had studied at Santa Monica College and was a former ramp supervisor for Servisair, an airport contractor.  Police focused on airport employees, and LAPD chief stated "Whether you think this is a harmless prank or a way to disrupt operations at the airport, it won't matter, You will go to jail."

Similar device, supposedly not connected on May 28, 2013 Christian Isaiah Barnes Disneyland Dry Ice Bomb Christian Barnes (23 year old African American male) sold drinks from a cart at the park, pled guilty to setting off a dry ice bomb in his vending cart and the placed another in Toontown trash can at Disneyland, which created a panic and police and bomb squad response.  In a plea deal Barnes pleaded guilty in November to a misdemeanor count of possession of a destructrive device, and was ordered to stay away from Disneyland, as no link to terrorism was established. (1) In another incident, a former TSA worker made threats to LAX in September.

DRY ICE BOMBS HAVE BEEN DEADLY, COPS SAY IN WAKE OF LAX ARREST LA weekly
DENNIS ROMERO OCTOBER 16, 2013 The man accused of placing at least three dry ice explosive devices around LAX did it out of “curiosity,” police said at a news conference today In 1992, the detective said, a liquor store operator was cleaning up when he saw a glass bottle, picked it up, and it exploded. The fragments “slit his throat,” Robi said, and “he bled to death.”  In 2002 a woman picked up a bottle at a gas station convenience store, he said. It exploded and “lacerated her hand:”

Can a harmless prank have the same effect as "real" terrorism like a driver who does not stop, but does not actually kill anybody in a DC police chase, or a man who delays trains for hours by waving a knife? And why is a person with employee access doing this? The mother of "airport boy" also works at the airport.

Suspect was identified as 28-year-old Dicarlo Bennett, according to the sources. Public records show that Bennett lived in South Los Angeles. He was arrested Tuesday in Paramount, the LAPD said. A Facebook account registered to a Dicarlo Bennett said he studied at Santa Monica College and was a former ramp supervisor for Servisair, an airport contractor. All three devices were found in areas off-limits to the public, leading LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and other officials to concentrate on airport workers -- particularly those with access to the tarmac. "Whether you think this is a harmless prank or a way to disrupt operations at the airport, it won't matter," Beck said. "You will go to jail."

Legality[edit]

Dry ice bombs are illegal in some jurisdictions in the United States,[6][7] and can lead to imprisonment.[8]
  • A law in California that defines "destructive device" includes a list of "weapons" including "[any] sealed device containing dry ice (CO2) or other chemically reactive substances assembled for the purpose of causing an explosion by a chemical reaction".[9][10]
  • A dry ice bomb went off in the Toontown section of Disneyland in Anaheim, California on May 28, 2013, resulting in the evacuation of Toontown but causing no injuries. A Disneyland employee was arrested in connection with the blast.[11]
  • In Nebraska[12] and in other areas the noise generated may violate local laws.
  • Arizona prohibits dry ice bombs if there is an intent to cause injury, death, or damage to the property of another,[13] as well as their possession by "prohibited possessors" such as convicted felons and illegal immigrants.[14]
  • Leaving an unexploded dry ice bomb can be construed as public endangerment.
  • In Utah simple possession of dry ice bomb or similar pressurized chemical reaction bombs is a second-degree felony.[15]

r device that exploded at a Los Angeles liquor store in 1992 was deadly.

LAPD bomb squad Det. Paul Robi said the liquor store operator was cleaning inside when he picked up a glass bottle and it exploded, the fragments “slitting his throat.”

"He bled to death," Robi said Wednesday.

The bottle filled with dry ice had been placed in the store by a juvenile who was later convicted and received four years in California Youth Authority.

"He was a prankster," nvestigators found no motive other than Bennett did it for his own amusement.

"There is no terrorism here," Downing said. "There is one man involved here who made some very poor choices."

Police said no one saw Bennettt on surveillance cameras, but there was "plenty" of evidence linking him to the dry ice bombs. Bennett was identified after LAPD criminal conspiracy detectives interviewed several other airport workers, sources said.

The FBI has taken over the investigation into a dry ice bomb that exploded in a men’s bathroom at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday evening.
The explosion, which is created by filling a bottle with dry ice, occurred at about 7 p.m. in a restroom at Terminal 2, which is home to several international and domestic airlines.
Officials said an airport employee heard an explosion in a men's room and went to investigate. He discovered a 20-ounce plastic bottle that had contained the dry ice. The blast did no damage, and no injuries were reported.
In May, a dry ice bomb at Disneyland temporarily shut down Toontown.
After the explosion Sunday, operations were suspended in the terminal, and flights were delayed until about 8:45 p.m. as the Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad responded. Police estimated about four flights were affected.
