Ammonia leak Incidents

Ammonia leak Incidents

Ammonia liquid, which is used in the refrigeration process, immediately turns to gas when it mixes with air and forms a vapor cloud. It is extremely dangerous because the gas reacts with water, so if it is inhaled it will mix with the moisture in human lungs and if not treated immediately will cause respiratory failure. Level A entry team means they were fully outfitted in encapsulated, pressurized hazmat suits with an attached breathing apparatus. “They were immediately met with a vapor cloud that reduced their visibility to about four inches,” Loomis said. “It was like the worst foggy day you can imagine.”

Ammonia leak at Newcastle Orica site
4:00 am Orica workers discovered a leaking pipe containing about 100 kilograms of liquid ammonia. Orica workers this morning discovered a leaking pipe containing about 100 kilograms of liquid ammonia.
Chemical giant Orica is close to finishing the clean up of another ammonia spill at its Newcastle site. It is the latest in a series of toxic leaks at Orica's Kooragang Island site which in 2011 resulted in the shut down of the ammonium nitrate plant. Nearlyb homes were not be notified of the leak because nothing has escaped off-site, the general manager Greg Holmes says the incident is very minor

September 3, 2013 Four people were injured as a result of an ammonia leak in the South Gate area on Tuesday morning.

This is the second time that liquid ammonia has come under the media spotlight in recent months. It first drew public attention early this summer. On the morning of June 3, in an explosion caused by a liquid ammonia leak in a chicken processing company in the city of Changchun in Jilin Province, 120 people were killed and 77 were left injured.  According to statistics from the State Administration of Work Safety, a total of 36 deaths were reported in 10 liquid ammonia leak cases nationwide from 2002 to 2009, reported the 21st Century Business Herald. So it's understandable that both the public and authorities do not regard liquid ammonia as a very fatal chemical substance. This perspective must be reversed after the Changchun explosion.

in October 2012, another ammonia-leak-related accident claimed the lives of a further 479 people poisoned in Honghu City, Hubei Province, Shangai Daily informed. The majority of China’s work-related accidents take place in the mining industry. Last year alone, 1,300 people were killed in floods, explosions and collapsed mines. Exposure to ammonia fumes can cause ammonia toxicity, which produces chronic respiratory complications and a symptomatic airway edema. Most victims of the accident had internal burns immediately after inhaling the ammonia fumes.

      Ammonia leak, Kooragang Island, Australia[edit]

Initially, more than 900 kilograms of ammonia was suspected of venting to the atmosphere from Orica’s plant on Kooragang Island, during a 45 minute period, on 9 November 2011. The venting was due to a relief valve operating to prevent overpressure of a liquid ammonia tank. Engineering studies subsequently revised the amount down to ~90 kilograms.[21] The leak was identified by firefighters responding to an alarm raised by the hospitalisation of two railway workers at Mayfield who were affected by the plume of escaping gas.[22] Six fire units and a hazardous chemicals unit were called to the chemical plant to deal with the leak of the ammonia gas.[23] Despite initial statements by Orica that the leak posed no public health risk,[23] two rail workers in the nearby suburb of Mayfield East were overcome by ammonia fumes and were taken to hospital with breathing difficulties.[21] Less than an hour before the ammonia leak, the Environment Protection Authority announced it would take Orica to court over the hexavalent chromium leak which occurred on 8 August 2011 at the same plant.[23]
