  11. October 7, 2015 Man shot and killed in 2nd homicide of year in Old Town Alexandria Washington Post Police in Alexandria said a man was shot and killed in Old Town, making it that area's second homicide of the year. The incident began around 11:45 p.m. comments blame housing projects: s a block from the other homicide in Alexandria; both shootings were on the periphery of a public housing project. Why don't we redevelop the two blocks of projects into something else? New condos? Shopping or dining?  I'm sick of the crime and getting awakened by sirens in the middle of the night. Time to bulldoze the buildings and put up something that's not a blight on the city. area has undergone some great enhancements and serious investment over the past 18 months - Bella Pre Apartments, the Bradley Apartments, the Bastille relocating, the Lost Dog Café coming in to the Bella Pre courtyard - but we still have the project on North Fayette. Plans available in City Hall have the projects removed in a few years, I think we should move that timetable up somewhat... projects will be razed and something new will be put up. I heard the shots last night as well, and saw the aftermath early this morning. This was more dangerous than the last murder as one of the bullets hit a parked car with a couple in it and another bullet hit a wall of one of the adjoining apartment buildings... the housing projects in Old Town and North Old Town are being emptied out and knocked down, and new mixed-income development is going up in its place...  location is right across the street from one of Alexandria's as yet unredeveloped public housing projects.

  6. October 6, 2015 Were the Oregon Shooting Victims Christian Martyrs? Ruth doubts it Slate Magazine One of the most shocking details from last week's shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon was that gunman Chris Harper-Mercer reportedly singled out people who said they were Christian. It’s too early to say, but we’ve used the label for mass shooting victims in the past and it ended up being a mistake. initial account then was this: In the Columbine library, one of the killers held a gun to the head of a 17-year-old girl named Cassie Bernall and asked if she believed in God. She said yes, and he shot and killed her. Bernall became an instant martyr, and an icon to many American Christians. She inspired sermons, prayer services, and songs, including the Christian pop star Michael W. Smith’s “This Is Your Time.” At her funeral, which attracted strangers from all across the country, her pastor proclaimed she was “in the martyrs’ hall of fame.” Bernall’s mother wrote a best-selling book, She Said Yes: The Unlikely Martyrdom of Cassie Bernall. But Bernall’s martyrdom turned out to be untrue

  1. October 3,  2015 2 buildings destroyed, 5 vacated 2 killed Borough Park, Brooklyn apartment explosion that killed 2 may have been ... WABC-TV - Officials initially pointed to natural gas from a stove as the possible cause of the explosion, but they're now looking at the potential of another fuel source. Surveillance video of the blast is perhaps the first big clue that this wasn't a typical gas-feed explosion. The video shows a simultaneous blast and fireball blowing out of the second floor of the apartment of 48-year-old Francisca Figueroa.  The investigation is now focused on the intentional setting off of the explosion. Debris is being tested for any chemicals that may have been used as an accelerant. While all possibilities are being looked at, there is now renewed interest in Figueroa's financial debt, which we are told was considerable. She was being evicted from her apartment for being months behind on rent and her gas had been turned off back in June. Five buildings have been vacated, and two of them are expected to be demolished. tags: eviction, suicide, deliberate accident
