Dayton Mall Incidents

1 killed, 1 wounded, 2 suspects at large June 11, 2014 Two people were shot when a red Dodge pickup opened fire in the parking lot of the PF Chang’s Restaurant in Miami Township. Jermaine D. Boone, 41, of Los Angeles, died in the hospital. April 2013: In the past month, federal authorities and regional drug task forces have arrested seven people on heroin, cocaine and other drug charges around the mall. A 20-year-old Dayton man died at a drive through just south of the mall in a shoot-out with the FBI during a drug investigation. In another case, authorities said four people arrested at a nearby hotel were making 50 to 100 drug deals a day in parking lots around the mall...Everyday more than 26,000 drivers pass the mall’s main intersection, Springboro Pike and Ohio 725, just east of Interstate 75, according to traffic counts. More than 2,000 work in the mall itself, according to mall officials.

Other high profile cases include:
  • On April 15, Phillip Lane II, 23, and Erik Sanford, 24, of Dayton were killed and two others injured when their speeding car headed north on Ohio 741 crossed the center line and smashed into an oncoming car at the Moraine-West Carrollton city limits. A third person in Lane and Sanford’s car was taken to Kettering Medical Center.
  • Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said Sanford had been identified as a member of the Dayton View Hustlers street gang, which has been identified by police as a major source of heroin sales in the Dayton area.
  • On April 4, Jermaine C. Coleman Jr., 20, of Dayton, was fatally shot at the Beverage Palace on Kingsridge drive during an undercover FBI investigation that resulted in the arrest of Tobe McLarty, 28, of Dayton, and Tyler Christian, 26, of Dayton, They face conspiracy to distribute cocaine and other charges.
  •  On March 27, Edward Jemison, 21, of West Carrollton, Trae A. Griffith, 25, of Moraine, Charles Wiggins, 22, of West Carrollton, and Jamal Whatley, 19, of Dayton, were arrested after a four-month drug investigation and accused of selling heroin to as many as 100 people a day, mostly in deals in parking lots around the mall.
