Bergdahl walked away from his base, reportedly without a weapon, in June 2009 and was captured by the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network. At least six soldiers were killed in subsequent searches for Bergdahl. Moreover, CNN reported that soldiers in his platoon said attacks seemed to increase against the United States in Paktika Province in the days and weeks following his disappearance

In many mass shootings that end in suicide, we’re left asking why. Adam Lanza destroyed his computer before committing the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and investigators were only able to retrieve some information from his hard drive. But like Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech killer, Elliot Rodger left behind a140-page manifesto, entitled “My Twisted World,” in which he places the blame for his post-adolescent misery and subsequent rampage squarely on the shoulders of the women who rejected him over the course of his wealthy Santa Barbara upbringing. (His father is an assistant director on the “Hunger Games” films and his grandfather was one of the founders of the Magnum photo agency.) Rodger had been planning his “day of retribution” for three years.
His parents, who are divorced, received the manifesto before a local news station did, and called police and raced to his apartment to try to stop him. It was too late. They’d been concerned about their son in recent years: He was planning to drop out of Santa Barbara City College because of his inability to make friends, and, according to his father, he had Asperger syndrome. In April, his mother had called the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office after seeing a number of disturbing YouTube videos her son made.
