Late in the evening of August 9, 1991, Alessandro Garcia and then 15-yr old Jonathan A. Doody drove to the Phoenix Buddhist temple in Doody's 1983 Ford Mustang. Doody was staying with Garcia to finish high school after his parents moved to Colorado, and had a brother who had studied at the temple, and heard of a gold Buddha and spent two months planning a robbery which evolved into a war-game with military equipment and tactics. They burst in and ordered the monks to the floor. They arranged them in a circle, kneeling and facing one another, and for the next hour they took turns holding them at gunpoint and ransacking the place. The monks had offered no resistance. At one point, a nun came in and she was forced to join the men. Six monks, a nun and two helpers were killed in a robbery turned into a terrorist attack. Doody was 17 when he was convicted in 1993 and sentenced to 281 years in prison, but his conviction was overturned in 2011 when a federal appeals court determined he was not properly read his rights and his confession was forced.

PHOENIX (AP) -- A jury has resumed deliberations in the case of a man charged in the 1991 killings of nine people at a suburban Phoenix Buddhist temple.
The panel on Monday resumed deliberations in the trial of 39-year-old Johnathan A. Doody following a break since Oct. 3.
That was the day that deliberations started over with an alternate joining the panel after another juror was excused Oct. 2.
The original panel started deliberating on Sept. 24. Doody's trial began Aug. 12.
A federal appeals court overturned Doody's conviction in 2011, noting he wasn't properly read his rights.

He went from one to another, and if the first shot appeared not to have killed the victim, he'd shoot again. In the end, nine people lay dead in a circle. Garcia used the back of a knife to carve the word "Bloods" on the wall in the hallway, hoping to deflect the police, and together they sprayed the place with fire extinguishers.It took almost two months, but the military police spotted the rifle and it was confiscated for testing. They had a match, and a link to a killer: Jonathan Doody. He lived with Garcia and a search of their apartment turned up the shotgun.
