September 28, 2015 1 killed 1 arrested Omar Mark Pettigen Confesses to Self Defense Butchering Retired Math Teacher Mother Omar Mark Pettigen, a from Oakland, California had been  was acting strangely since returning from Morocco.  He was arrested for killing his mother in Fremont and desecrating her remains. He told police his mother Nailah Pettigen was hopelessly addicted to oxycodone from hip and knee problems. He had no choice but to defend himself when she pointed a gun at him while sitting in bed. He says he picked up a hammer and knocked the gun out of her hand and then to neutralize the threat, grabbed a tomahawk hanging in the hallway and struck her head with the ax. To make sure she could not harm him, he returned with a revolver and shot her at least four times and then slit open her abdomen with a knife, cut out her heart and masturbated over her body, confessing to police that "it felt good". Counterterrorism blogs speculated if his religion or ethnicity had radicalized him.
