Islamist insurgents now control an additional province in Syria to Raqqa, which is a stronghold of Islamic State. Syrian officials did not immediately comment on the report.

The attack left 22 people dead, mainly foreign visitors of the museum, along with two gunmen. Chaieb has been considered a senior figure in the North-African branch of Al Qaeda.
