He was drunk and possibly on cocaine after a night at a drive in movie with girlfriend Della Svenningsen. She got out of the driver seat after Ward demanded she sit in back, and drove off with their two children, crashed the van and abandoned the two seriously injured children.

Ward's extensive criminal history includes nearly a dozen felonies. Ward has spent most of the past two decades in prison. He has to register as a Level 3 predatory offender. Ward had warrants for arrest in two counties, domestic assault and violation of domestic-abuse no-contact order against girlfriend Della Svenningsen and was barred from having contact during the time of the accident, but they went to a drive-in movie theater with their two children, along with Svenningsen's older son and his girlfriend. Ward had been drinking alcohol during the movie and was intoxicated. She smelled what she believed was crack cocaine. They all left, with Svenningsen driving. The couple was arguing. Svenningsen's older son and his girlfriend got out at the girlfriend's home on St. Paul's Mechanic Avenue, and Svenningsen did, too.when Ward told Svenningsen to get in the back in the vehicle so he could leave. She refused. Ward slid over to the driver's seat and drove off with their children. She immediately heard a crash with her two younger children crying and screaming her name. She ran down the street and found her Kia sport van with heavy damage to the front, in a construction cut-out in the road.
