  8. Hezbollah chief condemns ISIS execution of 21 Copts
  9. Lebanon’s Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah strongly denounced the slaughter of 21 Egyptian Copts by Islamic State militants, local media reported on Monday. The extremist group released a graphic video on Sunday showing the beheadings of the Copts that were kidnapped in Libya. The men were reportedly abducted in the Libyan city of Sirte on two separate occasions – seven on December 31 and 14 on January 3.

  12. Copenhagen attacker ‘had no links’ to wider network - Danish PM Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt on Monday described the deadly attacks in Copenhagen as “acts of terrorism.” There is “no indication at this stage that [the gunman] was part of a cell,” she said, referring to the attacker who was later killed by police. “But we will of course in the coming time evaluate our fight against radicalization.” A Danish court on Monday jailed two suspected accomplices of the gunman, AP said.
  13. French police detain 5 suspects after Jewish graveyard vandalized Five teens aged 15-17 have been detained in Sarre-Union in eastern France, suspected of the desecration of a Jewish graveyard, Tass news agency reported. One of those arrested came to police voluntarily early Monday, according to prosecutors. They added that the motives of the teenagers are still unclear, but they reportedly insist their attack “was not anti-Semitic.”
  14. Pope Francis: Copts killed for being Christians Pope Francis on Monday expressed deep sadness for the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians in Libya. He departed from the script of an address to emphasize the unity of all Christians. “Their only words were: ‘Jesus, help me!’ They were killed simply for the fact that they were Christians,” Reuters quoted Francis as saying in his native Spanish.
  15. 2 suspects charged in Copenhagen with helping gunman Two men were charged in Copenhagen on Monday with aiding the gunman who killed two people in twin weekend attacks, AFP said. They were accused of helping the Copenhagen attacker get rid of his weapon and giving him somewhere to hide, lawyer Michael Juul Eriksen said. Egypt strikes IS group in Libya after video of mass killing

Egyptian warplanes struck Islamic State targets in Libya on Monday, just hours after the extremist group released a grisly video showing the beheading of several Egyptian Coptic Christians it had held hostage for weeks.

e the most vocal and visible proponents of atheism have strayed far away from promoting reason, tolerance and secular values and into promoting misogyny, xenophobia and far-right politics.... for far too many people in the movement, atheism was if not a front then at least a rationalization for xenophobia or racism or both.

Why I Drifted Away from the Atheist Movement

I used to be a militant atheist. Here’s why I’m not anymore:
I’m loath to use the A word because the most vocal and visible proponents of atheism have strayed far away from promoting reason, tolerance and secular values and into promoting misogyny, xenophobia and far-right politics.
But for at least a couple years, from sometime in 2006 until sometime in 2009, I was a militant atheist, dashing off dozens of blog posts condemning religious thought for promoting murder and mutilation. I thought we, the atheists of the world, were railing against injustice and speaking truth to power.
Atheism felt just and true and important. But no longer. What happened?

                            Atheism as Justification for Xenophobia

Over time I sensed that for far too many people in the movement, atheism was if not a front then at least a rationalization for xenophobia or racism or both.
