Police found the driver Jose Alejandro Sanchez-Ramirez, 54, of Yuma, Arizona, who was not in the cab when it was hit, had fled apparently disoriented about a mile away, and arrested him on a felony hit and run charge. The truck was seen by the train crew to be on fire before the collision. The truck driver told police that he turned too soon and drove onto the tracks instead of the intersection, and then the engine quit and would not wart.  Sanchez-Ramirez’s wife, Lucila Sanchez, told The Los Angeles Times that he jumped out of the truck when he saw the train approaching and couldn’t restart his engine. “It’s not his fault,” she said

Sanchez-Ramirez delivers produce, but was pulling a trailer with some welding equipment in it. His story was old police he turned onto the tracks before the crossing arm came down, turned prematurely and his truck got stuck straddling the rails. 28 people were transported to six area hospitals. 2015 Oxnard train derailment

The 2015 Oxnard train derailment occurred on February 24, 2015 when a Metrolink passenger train collided with a truck on a grade crossing and derailed at Oxnard, California, United States. Thirty people were injured.

Accident[edit]

The accident occurred at 5:44 a.m. local time (13:44 UTC) when a passenger train collided with a 2005 Ford F-450 pick-up truckand trailer on the Rice Avenue grade crossing in Oxnard, California. The train derailed, with three carriages falling onto their sides and a fourth remaining upright, as did the locomotive.[1][2] The train was travelling from East Ventura to Los Angeles.[3] It was travelling at 40 to 50 miles per hour (64 to 80 km/h) when it hit the truck.[1] The train's usual cruising speed is 79 miles per hour (127 km/h).[4]
The truck was seen by the train crew to be on fire before the collision.[4] The truck driver is reported to have driven along the tracks having turned too early at an intersection. The truck was facing the train when the accident occurred.[1] The driver fled following the accident, but was later arrested about a mile away.[5] There were 48 passengers and three crew on board the train.[6] Of those, 30 were injured,[7] 28 of whom were taken to hospital, four of them said to be in a critical condition.[4] The train driver was one of those critically injured. Victims were treated at the Community Memorial HospitalLos Robles Hospital & Medical CenterSt. John's Regional Medical CenterSt. John's Pleasant Valley Hospital and Ventura County Medical Center.[8]

Aftermath[edit]

Metrolink trains between East Ventura and Moorpark were cancelled. A bus service was laid on for passengers travelling to these stations.[2] Local roads around the scene of the accident were closed.[3] Amtrak services between Los Angeles and Goletathat also use the Union Pacific coast line were also cancelled.[9]

Investigations[edit]

The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the accident.[5][7] A Go-team was despatched to the scene.[10] The train was fitted with a forward-facing camera in the cab car.[1]
The Federal Railroad Administration opened an investigation into the accident, the twelfth at the crossing in ten years. An average of four passenger and 24 freight trains use the line each day.[2]

“This was an accident. That’s all this was, was an accident,” Ventura attorney Ron Bamieh said at a Wednesday news conference. “Unfortunately, Mr. Sanchez misperceived the … railroad tracks to be the road. He turned right for a few feet and then he dropped onto the track.”
The truck got stuck in the tracks, and Sanchez-Ramirez tried to speed up and jerk the vehicle off the tracks, unsuccessfully, Bamieh said. Seeing the oncoming commuter train, Sanchez-Ramirez flashed his high beams to no avail, Bamieh said....alled his son from his flip phone. He spotted police officer, approached them and gave them the phone so his son could explain what had happened, according to Bamieh..
“To say he was trying to run away or was trying to flee the scene is totally incorrect. He was the one who went to law enforcement,”

Police say Jose Alejandro Sanchez Ramirez abandoned the commercial truck he was driving on California railroad tracks and was found about 1 ½ miles away.

Federal investigators say truck involved in California train crash wasn't stuck on tracks Published February 25, 2015FoxNews.com  Federal investigators said Wednesday that they are trying to determine why a pickup truck driver drove on to tracks and abandoned his truck, leading to a train crash that left three cars derailed and dozens injured in Southern California. "It was not stuck, it was not bottomed out on the track or something like that," National Transportation Safety Board member Robert Sumwalt said at a media briefing late Tuesday at the crash site in Oxnard. Officials had said immediately after the crash that the driver got stuck on the tracks. "We're very concerned about that, we're very interested in it," he said. The badly wrecked truck's emergency brake was in the on position and its headlight switch was in the high-beams position after the pre-dawn crash, Sumwalt said.
