BERLIN — Like most foreign-policy experts, I was shocked by Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its continuing “soft invasion” of eastern Ukraine. Can such a naked land grab really be happening now, in 21st-century Europe?
But Russia’s actions were not the only surprise. If you have followed the German debate about the Ukraine crisis, you have witnessed another strange phenomenon: a parade of former politicians and public figures going on TV to make the case for Russia.
According to these august figures — including former Chancellors Gerhard Schröder and Helmut Schmidt — NATO and the European Union were the real aggressors, because they dared to expand into territory that belonged to Moscow’s legitimate sphere of interest. And it seems part of the German public agrees.
You thought that Germans were the champions of international law and a rules-based world order? Think again.

Martin's wife had called police to report that her husband was threatening her and her children with a gun. Police said Martin had fired shots on the second floor of his home and toward neighbors' homes and officers. Police responded by firing tear gas in an attempt to move him and prevent further shooting, they said.
Moments later, Martin came out of the house, firing two handguns. One officer shot Martin as he came out firing. Police did not disclose how many times or in what direction Martin was firing.

Hearne police have said in a statement that Golden "brandished a gun" when officer Stephen Stem arrived Tuesday night. Dozens of protesters, including some who came in from Houston, marched to police headquarters on Thursday and were met there by Mayor Ruben Gomez, who said he will recommend that the officer be fired during Saturday's City Council meeting.
"It's a loss of confidence in the community. We can't have an officer the citizens have lost confidence in," Gomez said.
Hearne is home to about 4,500 people surrounded by cotton farms and railways, one of which backs up to Gordon's brick home.
Robertson County District Attorney Coty Siegert said a preliminary autopsy shows Golden was shot twice in the body and grazed by a third bullet. It's the second time Stem has shot and killed a suspect since joining the department in 2012, Siegert said.
"There's no justification. Any police officer would know not to kill a 93-year-old fragile woman when they could have backed off,"

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The family of a woman fatally shot by a Texas police officer during a high-speed chase into New Mexico filed a federal lawsuit last week saying agencies violated her constitutional rights. In papers filed in U.S. District Court in New Mexico, a family lawyer said the Denver City Police Department and the Yoakum County Sheriff’s Office in Texas failed to properly train officers and deputies and violated Amy Reyna’s rights when she was shot after a 20-mile, two-state chase in October. Reyna, 35, of Hobbs, N.M., drove into a southeastern New Mexico pasture and stopped before Denver City Officer Ryan Taylor fired seven shots at her car, authorities said.
